are 2-4s worth it

I have a 305 Chevy built up with edlebrock RPM pro.kit (carb. manifold heads cam and lifters) runs OK. Would a2-4s ( carb and manifold) set up be OK or a pain the butt. 2-4s look cool .

I like the look,And you can dial them in to perform good. But can be a pain sometimes.Just don't over carb your motor. They work good with the 450's.But if you want the best performance,Stick with one carb...

2 X 4's

I heard pros and cons before I put 2 X 4's on my .060 over 283 in a Model A coupe. I only use the idle circuit on the rear carb and close the needle valves and back off the idle speed on the front carb. I used 2 - 600 CFM edelbrock 1405's(because I had them) and contrary to what I heard about the engine being over carbureted the car wales with them on. Being air valves the secondaries will only open when they have enough air flow. Needless to say I am happy as hell and the look of 2-4's with the hood off is priceless and the sound of two fours at full tilt is awesome.

2 x4s are ok but what type a low rise or a tunnelram if you are running a auto trans you will have to up your converter to like 3000 -3500stall, then change the rear gears to work with that.eveything is like a big puzzle all the pieces have to be there for it to work RIGHT. first a 305 doesnt have big enuff heads to beath so add another 1200.00 for heads stick with a single 4bbl unless you got DEEP pockets. the guys who run those 2x 4 set ups dont just stick them on and go.

Will you HAVE TO change the converter, rear end gears, or heads.....not with a well designed manifold and properly sized carbs. Would you notice performance gains by doing so......yes but that would hold true with a single 4 BBL setup too.

Multiple carb sets ups became popular in the mid-late 50's. They were introduced for a fairly simple reason. The carburetors of the day were not keeping up with the increased demands for fuel that the bigger high performance engines of the day demanded. The answer was to add more carburetors. The factory dual quad setups found their way onto relatively small engines (by today’s standards) the 283 Chevy, 312 Ford and 318 Plymouth. The public at the time justifiably began associating more carburetors with more power (and do to this day).

As manifold design and carbs evolved thru the 60 to today on most street engines a properly designed intake and single carb setup will make more HP and Torque in the engine’s RPM range than a multiple carb setup will and they will generally get better gas mileage in the process.

If you’re willing to pony up the money, lose a bit of power and mileage (but still have a streetable car) by all means do it. Sometimes the cool factor does outweigh other things.
