hey, thatnks for reading this. i hav a 76 chevy truck it has a small block 400. it ran good until yesterday, every time that i try to take off it cuts out but it doesnt die. it kind of sputters. does anyone know what might be wrong. thanks
By the way, when i put it in park and rev it up it sounds fine but when i put it in gear it it does that sputtering thing, lol sorry i dont know what it is.
Sounds like a muffler bearing problem from here... :mwink:
Ok, Ok ... check your fuel delivery. An engine under load requires more fuel. It might act that way if, say, the fuel filter was almost plugged off ... ???
If you look down the carb while pushing the throttle with the engine off you should see a good shot of fuel. If not you probably have a bad accelerator pump. It is fairly easy to replace. You will probably need to buy a whole rebuild kit to get one.
The other thing I would check it point gap. Should be about .017 - .019 with the point rubbing block on one of the dist cam hight points. If you have or can borrow a dwell meter set it to 28-32 degrees.
The accelerator pump is a common issue with that style carburetor.
I just went and checked the accelerator pump and it squirts the fuel out in a nice stream and i also checked the fuel pressure and its at 4.5-5 psi, im also running a electric fuel pump instead of a manual.
