I realize the 7.5 is not the strongest unit however I scored the new posi for under 100 the gears for 20 at a swap meet and the housing and axles were free out of a 92 z28 with 30k.
For the money I have invested Ill have some fun with it and if it grenades it grenades.

|lmsport||Ring spacers are OK for moderate horsepower and street tires. More than 500 horsepower and/or slicks at the track and I would get the preferred gear set. The ring gear will probably still register on a Auburn carrier, but not a GM.|

|woodz428||I think that there are, or where, a couple places that offered spacers. It was done regularly at one time..on some rearends. All the comments about set up are important...with every set up, regardless of using a spacer or not.|

I am aware of the thick gear sets available however I do not think cost will allow me to make use of them.
I will probably have somone set the rear up for me, I have successfuly replaced a posi diff in a 9.25 chrysler however this rear is going to have a bit more abuse put to it, so I am leaning towards having someone else set it up for me.

yes you can run a ring gear spacer, i do in my gasser with both 4.88s and 5.38s. you need to check backlash at different places 120 degrees apart on the ring. you also have to check for runout on the outside of the ring gear with a dial indicater. if these check out you are good to go...
PS-you also need to know how to set up pinion depth and read tooth contact patterns-both coast and drive-if you can't do these, all bets are off (in other words, YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING...

There are 3.73 gear sets made with a 'thick' ring gear for this application, (2-series carrier). Do you have part numbers to check?

Is it ok to use a Ring Gear spacer?
Hey guys, this winter im looking to assemble a new 7.5 10 bolt rear for my streetcar.
I have a new Auburn pro posi which is 2 series carrier.
I ran into a deal on a GM 3.73 ring and pinion set which must be 3 series if its GM.
Is it ok to use a ring spacer? I have been told that ring gear wont center correctly on the differential case because the ring will cover up the machined band around the case. Is this true?
All thoughts, opinions and experiences gladly appreciated.
