I took a trip to Bonneville last summer and got the bug. When I returned home my son and i staryed working on a Jeep Comanche to run this year. We will be running a Jeep 4.0 I6, bored and stroked to 5.0L should put out about 450HP at 6500 rpm. Not too many people building I6 motors, If anybody has Jeep or AMC experience i would like to hear from them.

Thanks

Pete

I ran a '65 Rambler American 330 sedan as a daily driver over the summer ( unmolested, unrestored, 196 6cyl/ auto ) but sold it b4 winter... I have a 1967 Ford Falcon project that I turbocharged the 200 6cyl, but due to having no time and lack of funds.. I just listed it on Ebay a couple days ago :(

Bonneville is one venue I promised myself that I'd see before I was done.

I've been fascinated w/land speed record cars (streamliners, particularly) ever since my Dad showed them to me in Hot Rod, ca. 1959-ish.

This was in the days of Art Arfons' Green Monster series of jet-powered cars and Mickey Thompson, et al. Craig Breedlove was a "newbie" and I NEVER liked his jet car "Spirit of America" (but the Arfons' jet was OK- go figure) OR the idea of him besting Micky's Challenger (4 Poncho's, blown, 4WD, no suspension- a beautiful Beast).

But I digress. Best of luck w/your straight-6 powered racer. There seems to be a pretty good amount of info on the 4L Jeep, I researched it some when I came into the Jeep I'm now driving.

Interesting hybrid combo's using the old 258 cid engine combined w/the 4L engine are out there, I'm sure before you are done, you will know all about them!

Welcome Pete, this is a 235 motor I am running in my 1948 Chevy pickup with a 53 Vette intake.

I can't find the photo of my family and I out on the Bonneville speedway in our Windstar! I have never been there for Speedweek but plan on it before they put the pennys in my eyes! Running out on it with the family mini van was WILD though!

Now THAT'S a set up you don't see every day!

Sharp looking- those look to be the original side drafts from the 'vette, too. What do you do for a filter?

EDIT- What's up w/the radiator tank? Can't figure that one out.
Those are original carbs. The air cleaners where little "bullet" looking things on the 53 then in 54 they went to a twin round style filter. The rad tank is just that, the rad tank. That is an original mounted where the original was.

So the tank is actually an expansion tank. Neat!

I've got a lot of experience with the AMC sixes. Barney Navarro built one to run at Indy, and it was used in a land speed record attempt. Big turbo and mechanical fuel injection -- sleeved 199 block with a pretty much stock crank, sleeved down to 182 inches. Ran something like 25 psi boost, needed the thicker cylinder walls.

You need to find a 1987-90 Jeep for the block. 91-92 might be okay, but around 92 Chrysler took a lot of metal out of the block. They added some back in 96 after a lot of complaints. The early block will be a bit thicker. You're still going to have a cylinder wall thickness problem boring it out enough to make 5.0L. You'll be better off to stick with a 0.060" overbore on the early block, and have it sonic checked before doing that. You may have to go through several blocks to get one that has uniform cylinder walls if you try boring 0.080" over to get 5.0L. At 0.060" with a 258 crank you end up with 4.7L, about the max reliable size. Some mud racers go for 5.0L, but I wouldn't plan on boosting it much or running it long that way.
