cranky1 I retired 3 years ago and 'had' a pretty decent nest egg but that sure doesn't look too good now and I also have my youngest in college right now too. I just hope this crap turns around in time for when she graduates in the fall of 2010. Anyways, I did pretty dang good in the stock market in 07 but didn't see this coming in time.
As for who is at fault for all this? It got it's start during the Carter admin when they were talking about how all Americans should have a peice of the American dream. Well, I think most here knows about the bar being lowered for a lot of Americans in this country and things just kept snowballing. The subprime crap started a long time ago and the banks just kept acting like the greedy aholes that they are. Anyone care to do some research on who Franklin Raines was and who appointed him as head of Freddie Mac? I'm not blaming the Dems or the Reps. I'm blaming them both!! Folks, if we keep taking the crap, they will continue to dish it to us and I'm really afraid of (our?) leader that we have now. Who is he going to bow to and do the 'hood' hand shake with next? For those that don't know, he bowed to the kind of Saudi not too long ago. Geez. That floored me! Then shortly after that, he did the 'hood' handshake with Chevez
Anyways, I used to do a lot of rearend work but stopped a few years ago and have been starting that back up. I also have a small machine shop but need to try and drum up some work. I'm sure glad I didn't sell any of my machines like I was thinking of doing....

powerrodsmike I'm quoting and taking on different work at the shop, stuff I would not have even considered a year ago. ( think butcher shop cold storage unit fabrication )

Being self employed has it's drawbacks, but at least I'm not at the mercy of someone elses whims and cost cutting plans.

But the shop phone is ringing again, that's a good sign. I think the media doesn't just report the news, they keep the biggest ball rolling.

I don't care who got us in this mess, it's here now and we have to just deal with it.

Our house was bought 13 years ago, with 25% down, and when the housing prices were high and it appraised at over twice it's purchased price, we still had less than 50% worth of loans against it. So I figure we are right about even, or just below, and having made all the payments on time, I'm about ready to go renegotiate the loan with the bank for a better interest rate.

smoke iT IS LIKE I have been preparing for this all my life. Or i should say my parents prepared me for it. Bolth my parents are in there mid to upper 80s and lived through this and taught me well.
I never really had the cool things others had as far as cars or a big house or any of that. Not sad just the way I wanted it. Not that I didnt feel I deserved what others had but I just was raised not to buy unless you had cash and make do with what you have.
I have a 600 dollar mortgage payment, guess it fits the 600sq foot house and the one truck is paid of so no big worries as of right now. The one thing I did do to go against what I was taught is I bought my dads truck from him and am still paying it off. It was my dad and what was I going to do. It is a 97 nssan 4x4 and with 40k miles and people would offer him 2 thousand for it. I gave him 6 with a smile and felt very good about doing so.
So now I guess some of the poeple that made fun of the way I lived are rethinking there lives. Not that I will make fun off them now because I still feel bad for the people I know that are loosing ther house or car or bolth.
I am just glad I listend to mom and dad.
Thank you. Your son.

38 special Been working 4 days a week for more than a year, when I am working. Last year we worked 3 weeks and was laid off one week. This year still 4 days a week Was laid off for a month so far and may be laid off again the 18th of May. We stopped using the credit card, and concetrate on paying them off faster when paossible as well as our mortgage. Don't eat out as much, and no vacation this year. Don't buy what we don't need. Try to live below our means.

ChevyThunder I am counting my lucky stars..... I just landed a well paying job with a very large oil company.

I am just hoping it doesn't disappear. If it doesn't I'm investing every cent in the crappy market so when it becomes uncrappy i have hopefully made a wise investment. While if it becomes worse I can continue buying and hopefully amplify my earnings.

We will see I guess. Things could always go south on me.

barnym17 Amen Bluesman greed and stupidity have no limits.Look at the current bailouts as an example. Also whats up with the news reports that Obama won't let the banks return Tarp money he wants common stocks instead so the gov will have voting rights in shareholders meetings.

Yep, like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd and the other lefties that made sure people who could't afford houses got them. Now we all must pay for them, and our kids, and grandkids also.

W did a lot of things that upset me. But he had a lot of help with the economy. People buying homes at 160% to 200% of value. Banks being forced to loan money to people who had no hope of paying it back. Basically people living way beyond their means and banks either voluntarily or legislatively letting them do it.
If you think the bill for the wars is bad, just think about how the kids today are going to feel about the bill for the bail outs.
We have been truly blessed. The people around here tend to live within their means. When houses in the east and west were approaching 2 times their value, people were buying homes here for 98% of their value. Maybe that is why we are the top place to relocate to. http://top100.relocate-america.com/ And trust me, we still have a lot of problems.
Final thought. You've heard it from me before. If you want jobs to move to America, let's get the FairTax. http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer

fast68 Ok, i'll bite, haha.

i have very few bills and i keep it that way purposely, i also live a very basic life,. i live well below my means and im fine with it and always have been. i work sleep and eat that its every single day even sundays. If i have these three things then i am doing damned good each day.
95% of my life revolves around repairing things, and chiefly vehicles. Right now business is pretty good with transmission failures and replacements for ppl in these 90's mitsubishi chryslers and also all the tauruses.
Have a 99 avenger on the lift right now we just put in a trans from a 99 sebring in it yesterday afternoon.

sure there will be many more in the near future to replace. As there always have been in the past years here. plus 90's engine replacements and so on, as usual.

Maye some year the economy will come back somewhat but the jobs i dont know about. There are just NONE anymore. It's really horrible now.
Alot of ppl here last year were making it by scrapping vehicles and steel at the shredder in peoria.
but now thats gone because prices fell out badly, back down to what they were a few years ago.,

i quit also,

when you live in a small town out in the middle of cornfeild where nothing exists you gotta do what ya gotta- get very creative. I have no idea how all these po-dunker type ppl in this town are getitng by at all, really no idea because they dont have the kind of resources i am lucky to have that i can use to surive. But then they dont sem to ever be working or busy or trying. So hmm..

Luckily back in the day i collected and scrapped stripped out tons of cars trucks and vans, and still have billions of parts aropund and stashed and have been able to sell them slowly but surely and that helps some also. a little.
i need to work on some new ventures soon, some real creative ones, this year asap. And as soon as PAM transport is hiring in IL again i will see if i can get into that.
I'd like to hear of what others are doing to get by, some creative things.

bluesman2333 I do think the media is overly doom and gloom. This leads to a crisis in confidence which is aggravating the situation. 1929 all over again.

Since I lost my job, I just filed for unemployment and cut back on bills like cable TV and going out. Various projects are on hold and I now have time to sell some spare computers I have here.

I have some money saved but that won't last forever. Thanks GWB for bankrupting our economy. I think we will have a recovery for a few years then be even worse when the bills come due for the two wars he started.

What are you doing to make it?

What are you doing to adjust to our crappy economy? I know some are hard hit, some seem to not be affected much or not at all. What would you do differently to make life easier, if it were possible? How much of the problem is self inflicted?

We're not having a terrible time right yet, we've had the same bills to pay for the last ten years, nothing has changed much. We're fairly thrifty, could be better. Employment is the same. Retirement may be scary. We've tightened up a little as to disposable income. But sometimes I wonder if the media hasn't blown things up to be far worse than they really are?
