The fella's on here IMO are not bashing you, they are as yourself experienced. They are only putting facts together to try and come up with a reasonable scenario or solution based on practical applications and "been there done that" topics. As this is a forum of ideas we/they/you/me are all free to express opinions, sometimes it can seem confrontational. You are of cource free to build just about any size/con-fig. of SBC you want ,that is what (among other things) makes them so popular. We would not be having this discussion about a 460 lima ford. Many on here have vast amounts of hands on hot rodding know-how, some like me know enough to be dangerous but we all still hold true to doing it right....IMO this forum stands strong....don't be discouraged

Killer, Your still one I have vast respect for as you always come through in knowledge. I didn`t think I was bashing anyone either but we know how that rolls. Saying I don`t believe a stock engine on the street could yank the wheels I also didn`t think was bashing, not believing somebody is bashing? If that`s the case I`ve really sinned on this site, amazing you guys haven`t kicked me off or nick named me the devil lol. I guess different opinions hurt peoples feelings sometimes and I never set out to hurt anyone that didn`t hurt me. I`ve usually took the honest approach in things as that`s how I was raised, if it hurts somebody`s feelings so be it but I thought it was best to be honest. I guess the old saying the truth hurts is too true.
I learned alot about it from my ex girl friend, the last thing she wanted to hear was the truth,, no wonder she got rid of me.

I know about 283's- they were the staple for anything that was raced if it had a SBC in it- the 327 had not come out yet- so it's all there was, except the 265 that had a following similar to what the 305 "enjoys" today.
I've heard it all- more than once. Without a LOT of ballast, or some other BS going on, there just ain't no way I'm gonna believe it.
That said, you received all sort of advise, mostly on target, IMO, pertaining to your using the 3.10" crankshaft.
Considering how poorly the HP/$ ratio is on such a project, I think everyone showed a good amount of restraint, actually.
But it's just not fair to paint the forum w/a brush w/MY name on it!
When someone talks about pulling the wheels, they had better mean that they were at the track, or some specially prepared surface- with race-type rubber, and no ballast, or other shenanigans going on- like a freaking engine block in the trunk. IMO, it ain't gonna happen on the "street", w/street rubber.
Performance talks and BS walks, to coin a phrase.

Hey, I know a guy that had a 56 Chevy with a 265 and pulled the front wheels back in the mid 80's! But he was running SS/O with it and anyone that knows anything about that class knows what it took to run under the index with that combo lol.
Hey man, be different and put a Mopar 318 in it!

it's like any more on here everyone bashes any ideas, not like a few years back and seemed more help on here, why i've not been on in a while, i have (2) 327 already, one small journal & one large journal, and have done the 307 craank in a 350 block couple timess for buddies caause they wanted a 327, i've built 406, 415 , an 427 stroker small blocks, and believe me or not my old lil 283 did pull front wheels off ground tall as a beer can with 5.13 gears in rear out old 54 chevy truck, and a M22 tranny, and did late 11's and early 12's in the quarter mile.

I never said you had to build a monster. I only suggested why spend more to have less? a 350 with few mods will do everything you want it to do plus knock off good mileage. As for the toting the wheels, I think you`ll be rather hard pressed to get any of us to believe it as there are no telling how many members on this board now and most of us have built hot rods with big and small blocks making over 400 horsepower plus shooting it with 200 horses or more of nitrous and we couldn`t pull the wheels.
And your telling us a stock 283 did it? I`m not saying it didn`t, but it sure didn`t in stock form and it didn`t on the street on regular tires.
If you want a middle of the road engine that will smoke the 350 262 combo you have in mind then all you need is a 327. You can build one of these with a 307 crank and a 350 block. Using standard 5.7 rods you can use regular off the shelf 327 pistons and it won`t cost you a arm and a leg as you won`t need custom parts. You don`t have to make it a monster, build it stock and it will do fine for your wife`s purposes. Do what you want, it makes no difference to me what`s so ever, it`s your time, your money. I`m only telling you why blow more cash for less engine when you can put that cash towards other improvements.

I never have had a 283 but a mate of mine had one when i was younger....
went like stink, sounded great and with a 4 speed behind it.We used to use his car for shopping . put groceries in boot pooped the wheels at every set of lights on the way home.....so underrated and while the 327 is thirsty the 350 coomon as kitty crap the 283 was nice. and im a ford nut...

why is it theres more idea bashing than help anymore, is it know one likes any ideas but theres, i was always told hot rodding is to be different and do the odd stuff, hell i was only building an engine for my wife's lil GMC Caballaro,
for her to run around in and every one wants to build a monster for an every day driver, and no one wants to believe a lil 283 can pull the wheels on a 1956 chevy, hell back in the day we only had 283 to use and they were hell of a good engine!! my thought is hell lot better than any 305 ever made!!, I'd rather have a 307 than any 305 ! and yes chevy made a 307 long before Old's ever did!, all was doing was putting a 262 crank in a 350 block using 302
pistons an works out to be a 315 cub. in., every 305 i every had i've broke the skirts off number 8 piston, i feel the piston to small to clear the crank bobs, out off 10 305 only one never broke number 8 piston and is was already weak so thinking was just to guttless to blow up!!!
