ok so my great grandma left me her house and all the land years ago so im out in the woods on whats my property now and i come acrost a 1964 firebird in a barn. that is also mine but after talking to a few family members i found out that the car may or may not have been stolen by my uncle around the 97-98 time frame. how can i go about finding out about weather its reported stolen i dont want to go to jail for something i didnt steal. id like to find that it wasnt stolen and repair the minor damage on it. basically i want it in my name but dont want to go down for it if it was stolen because all i did was find it..

added some periods lol iv determined its a 67 not a 64 to

Ok, a few things here. There are no 64 Firebirds, they didn't come out till 67, IIRC. You're not going to jail for this. Take the vin number to DMV and have them run for a lost registration. If it comes back clean, you're good to go. If it doesn't, someone gets there car back.

Just one more small advice, use some punctuation, periods, commas, etc. It's a heck of a lot easier to read and will get you more replies, many of our members will not take the time to interpret jumbled posts. :D

Don't think there was a firebird in 64. Whatever you have post some pics for us. And IMO take the vin# run it and see what happens with it it could come back clean you never know. Unless you are not telling everything you know about the car and your uncle  , Either way i would take the #s and run them you did'nt steal it you just happened to find it .

I would go for it take the vin# to the DMV like we have told you, Let them run the #s then you will know, You have'nt done any wrong just found it on you place. Like said in other post could come back clean you got a car, Could go back to original owner either way you might just end up with it . The original owner might not even want you never know you would be surprised. JMO Good luck and i hope you get to keep it. Just do like Dinger told you take the vin and run for a lost title see how it comes back clean or not and then you can take it from there, If it comes back clean you got a car, if it comes back stolen then let the officials do their thing and you still could end up with the car, JMO
I would love to find something like that on my place.

First, like everyone else has said, run the VIN. There is no point putting any time or effort in the car if the Police are simply going to come and take it from you.

Next, determine if the car can be fixed within your skill set and/or financial means. Assuming the six is the original engine for the bird, it should be an OHC. Not as desirable as a 400, but it would be a shame for you to get into it over your head and make it so no one can fix it. If it is more than you can handle, figure out the best way to sell it.

Assuming the VIN is clean and you can fix it up, find out how to go about getting a storage lien on the car so you can get a clear title. Check with your DMV.

Determine what you want the car to be when it is done. Make a list of the parts and services you will need. Establish a budget. Establish a schedule. Follow both to the best of your ability.

Here are some excellent articles on what you can expect on the engine.
