water in compressed air, what do i need?

i built my garage a couple years ago & i put in a devilbiss 6.5 hp 60 gallon air compressor. i never plumbed my garage with air lines, i just work straight from the compressor. when it rains a lot, or in the winter time especially, i get a lot of water coming through my air tools (die grinders). i put on one of the water separator/oilers thinking that would solve my problem, i was wrong. that little thing is a joke. i think i need something more like a devilbiss QC3 filter/dryer, but it's around $150.00 bucks. is this going to solve my problem? is there a cheaper way to go? my garage isn't heated either, so will that be a problem?

thanks

Probably nothing wrong with it, under the circumstances you are describing there is just no way it can do it's job and a more expensive one of the same type probably would do no better. There are several major factors that commonly contribute to water in the air and it seems from what you said that you are afflicted with all of them! First and the most important is to forget working straight off of the compressor and install some metal (NOT PVC!!!! :nono: ) piping, about 50' of at least 1/2", and place that water separator at the end of that as far from the compressor as you can get it. This line needs to be run properly and with traps/drains installed but it is not difficult to do nor terribly expensive. Use the search function to do a search for water in air lines and you should find a bunch of ways to do this, almost certainly there will be something there to solve your problem.

I had the same problem.. my solution was to run a pipe right to the celing and back down ( about 6' ) to a water seperator.. now all the water flows down into the compressor.. drain it out once a day and it's good, never any water at the paint gun and the compressor gets pretty hot.. draining the regulator on the compressor, I had to put a small water seperator right on the compressor because the water would back trace right thru the regulator.. now the trap catches it and dumps it outside because it's self draining ( closes with preassure, otherwise open ) and I ran a line out the wall
