Please be patient I'm really stupid when it comes to wires. Can I run a wire from the battery to a toggle switch and from the switch direct to the hei or do I have to put a relay in ?

You don't need to do all that. Just run the wire from a 12 gauge supply wire (so it will be fused and thick enough for the power level the hei will draw) from a switched source that is 12 volts hot in key-on and key-start. A multi-tester/volt-meter can verify that. The diagram I posted in the other thread was no help? It is the typical way full size jeepers do the hei conversion, but your 74 may be a little different.
If nothing else, post your question in a Jeep forum they will be more familiar with the wiring system and can probably give you a typical place to pull power from because an hei conversion is a real common mod.

It won't draw enough current to need a relay.
Provided it's not to small a wire, you can wire it to a switch like you asked about.
Like a previous poster mentioned, an ignition switched terminal in the fuse box would be preferred, but without knowing you application, it may not apply.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
