|dinger||Tape is where a guy should never cheap out. My wife and I had a major argument when we first married over this, she bought some crap that wouldn't come off the roll without tearing. She took it back, with instructions from me to get 3M. She brought back some more cheap crap, the fight was on! I went to the store and bought the good stuff. I don't know if the stuff is overpriced or not, if i did bodywork for a living I may think so. But I do know when I go to peel it off, it comes off without lifting the paint, having to be scraped off, or generally taking a LOT of time to remove, I am a happy guy! I used their blue tape last, it was ok but had a few overspray spots I thought should have never happened.|

A guy who was my next door neighbor for a number of years had spent his entire working life in the tape division of 3M. At the time we were neighbors, he was the production manager at one of 3M's plants. He was a real wealth of knowledge on most any sort of tape they made. This was a number of years ago, so at that time the beige masking tape was the only autobody masking tape 3M made (except for the fineline tapes).
He said the main difference between their regular masking tapes and autobody tapes was a heat treatment cycle that stabilized the adhesive. This treatment was the reason the autobody tape wouldn't get welded to the surface by short term exposure to the heat of the sun or the heat of paint curing lamps or ovens, while their regular masking tapes would weld themselves in place in the same exposure much the same as any dime store masking tape would.
When I asked him why the autobody tapes were so much more expensive than even their own non automotive tapes, he said there were multiple reasons. The autobody was considered a specialty tape, which automatically meant higher pricing. Next, the volume of autobody was only a small fraction of total masking tape production, further increasing the price due to the much smaller comparative volume of production. And finally, autobody supplies of all types are extremely high profit margin goods at the retail level, as compared to seemingly similar products retailed by general merchandisers.
Another thing he mentioned is that autobody tapes have a definite shelf life, and that's why there's a date code printed on the inside of the core of every roll of tape. He said anytime you run across a roll of tape that seems difficult to peel off the roll, chances are its old and if you use it you run the risk of it welding itself to the surface just like a roll of hardware store tape would do, or not adhering properly at the edges and resulting in paint wicking beneath the tape. Obviously, neither problem is something you'd want to risk for the price of a roll or two of tape.

3M has a new tape out, Yellow.
Try it ---you'll like it.
Both cost and workability.

|deadbodyman||Cheap tape really sucks .if you leave it on more than a day it's hard to get off in one piece and I d say buy 3-m's green or beige if your only doing one car but I buy by the case or the sleeve thats where the cost difference comes in.My supply guy delivers my tape and hes the one that turned me on to it.I'm not sure what brand it is but I'll find out. This company makes two types one sucks and one is just as good as 3-M but at .70 a roll cheaper..never buy your tape on price alone you'll be sorry...that 3-m is right up there with the best and I've used it for years.but their products are more expensive than the others that are just as good.and seem to go up every time I turn around.I don't use3-M unless I have to...|

|cyclopsblown34||3M green is the bomb in my opinion. My only use of the American was some cheap stuff that I ended up giving the wife to label rummage sale stuff. Neither of my paint suppliers keeps any decent American brand tape, they keep 3M.|

Honestly, "American" brand tape is pretty darn good, maybe even better than 3M.

|imperialman67||So if 3M's green masking tape is good ,but way overpriced is there a better cheaper tape on the market?|

Yes it's a joke, its a 2009ish Dodge Charger. Like any "consumable" product companies spend a lot of time coming up with new stuff because well......we consume it daily and WILL try new things. Some times these seemingly usless consumables can be transformed into a must have 3M dry guide coat and stripe eraser wheels come to mind.
The other day I went to the dentist and she handed me one of the most popular consumables in the supermarket, a tooth brush. I can't believe I would actually think about a toothbrush EVER during the day. I didn't even think about my toothbrush when I was using it! But this Colgate "360" is the most amazing device and here I am talking about it on a forum! Once in a while they come up with a must have, the 360 is it for me.
Don't knock what the paint companies have to offer, if not for them we would be brushing varnish and a brush.

|deadbodyman||Brian ,3-M's been making green masking tape for years its good stuff but way over priced.. You of all people should know this, so I guess its ment as a joke...These paint companies are like law makers they keep making crap we don't need just to keep their jobs....Once in a blue moon they do come up with something helpful....Is that a car or a tractor?|
