I'm thinkin about buy a scan tool I have been getting a lot of people coming to me to do some mechanic work for them and a scan tool would be very handy I would like it to do obd 1 and 2 and cover engine and transmission. Abs would be handy but not needed as much. I just recently found out that they make scan tools for under 3000 like the mac mentor and such. Any suggestions

there are 2 'real' scanners in the $500 range.. the Snap On MT-2500 'brick' and the OTC monitor 4000E... both will do OBD-1 and OBD-II... both can only be found used, but Snap on is still supporting the MT-2500 and the OTC monitor 4000E can use some of the Genesis hardware, and will scan newer vehicles, but it can seemingly get confusing

There are some cheaper scanners out there but do your research! I have used Cornwell's scanner and didn't like the way it worked. IMO it was very awkward and confusing to use. I have used Snap-On's scanner and is better for the money. I've been looking at the Snap-On scanner and still are probably the best option... for the price. I love dealer scanners because they work AWESOME... but mainly for one make. They do work on other vehicles because OBDII was to standardize all the different makes, but you don't get very much information. And they cost an arm and a leg. GM's Tech 2 scanner is $2500! But again, for the aftermarket scanners (Cornwell, Snap-On... Etc.) depending on what you're working on you need different cards for the scanner so I will work for the different makes of vehicles. They are out there, just do some really good research!

don't know the ins and outs too well, (what to look for, what brand does what) but I own the auto x-ray techscan7000. It retails for better than 500, but If you shop around you can find deals online. I got mine from tooldiscounter.com for under 350. I've used it on literally dozens of cars and have yet to find something it CANT do. abs and foreign obd1 are supported with different accessories, which you can buy online as well.
It's my first scanner so I'm by no means a pro, but I really am impressed with my ax7000.
