|big gear head||A TH400 only has 3 gears. With this transmission you would probably want to go with something around a 3.42 if you will be on the highway much. If you used an overdrive transmission then a 3.73 would be good.|

|bigkevy||what kind of gears would you recommend? i was thinking a turbo 400, having the first 3 gears more performance and the fourth gear for cruising?|

Add a Girdle type Diff cover and aftermarket rear Control Arms with Poly Bushings or Box your stock Lower Control Arms and install Poly bushings in the Upper & Lower Arms for more strength and wheel hop control. You can buy the inserts to box the LCA's or cut your own and weld in.

|big gear head||Your car has the 8.5 10 bolt in it with 28 spline axles. I have built a lot of these for Camaros and Novas. These are strong rear ends if you build them right. I recommend a 30 spline Eaton Posi, 30 spline Moser axles and quality gears and installation kit, such as Yukon. This will handle 500 HP in a street car. You MUST not allow the tires to wheel hop. This will break even the best rear end.|

Which rear end for a 73 El Camino
ive gotten real familiar with the engine section but i guess its time to start thinking about my transmission setup. im totally restoring a 73 el camino. im doing a 383 with roughly 500 hp. its going to be used 99.9% of the time on the street, but maybe once in a blue moon be taken to the strip. 500 hp is a lot ya but its my first car and im still young so of course i want a monster.
my question is what kind of rear end do i need? a 10 bolt, 12 bolt ford 9".....?
i mean i want to spin my tires at stop lights and all that and if it wont break and occasionally rase the front end up.
can i find what i need on like craigslist or a site like that for a couple hundred and put a couple hundred in it and be good?
and suggestions or direction to a website that will explain all this would be helpful
