What sort of performance improvement could a person expect with the installation of a Edelbrock Performer intake? Are there HP gains, torque, mileage?( A friend gave me one to go on our 283 build up)

No major noticeable (seat of the pants) gains with the Performer intake. There are gains, but unless you run the engine on a dyno you probably will not notice anything over the stock intake. If you use the Performer RPM (which is a high rise) you will feel the gains.

If your looking for performance a 283 is a bad starting point. I wouldn't build anything under 350 cubes unless it was a 5.0 or Buick turbo charged six. Let the cubes make the power otherwise you will end up with an engine that runs like crap just to keep up with the big dogs.
I recommend keeping it stock and going for gas mileage if you intend to use that engine.

So whats the scoop here? why do people run them and not just stay with the stock intake?
cause the stock intake weighs in excess of 60 lbs(sorry i just realized this wasn't about my motor)., and the aluminum looks hella better...... and if used in conjunction with a edelbrock cam, and carb (somehow i doubt the carb is a major factor) your supposed to see even more hp, but you spend even more $$$

and cause as we all know, one part might not make that much difference, (1-3 HP) but a bunch of parts (10x1-3 hp) does make a difference.....

Ha! ever hear of a 283 bored out to a 301.. It aint the size of the dog in the fight, its the size of the fight in the dog!! woof woof;) ;)
