|poncho62||When I built my 55, I used a truck bell housing that had the mounting for the starter.......I used a block mounted starter....If I remember correctly (this was 35 years ago), I had to cut away part of the bell housing....but it worked|

153 tooth Chevy flywheel in an original '55 Chevy 3 speed stick.
I recently swapped out a 6 banger, for a '66 283 in a 55 Chevy, I didn't know that the original 265's with a manual trans came with a 168 tooth flywheel. Anyway we installed a 153 tooth. The starter is an original style which bolts to the the bell housing and we found out yesterday that it won't work, as the starter teeth are about an inch away from the flywheel. So rather than go through the trouble of changing the flywheel, I'd like to know which other starter I could use...for example when going to a parts store for which model and year starter should I ask for. The 283 does have the threaded bolt holes in the block. I tried one starter that I had laying around but no luck. Would appreciate some helpful info. -----Classic Chevy Dave
