The expanded metal isn't welded into place yet. Just took a picture to show how it is looking. I plan on shooting some red primer and some olive green colored paint on the diamond plate.......Thanks for the heads up though, would hate to have it look like a rusty pipe...

MARTINSR It looks nice, but you are going to have one problem, painting it so that the back side of the expanded steel is protected and the diamond plate behind the expanded steel is protected. You are simply not going to be able to spray that and cover all those areas. You WILL have rust stains running down in a very short while. So do some kind of "dipping" or something to get all that stuff coated so it doesn't rust. I don't have any real good ideas though.

My homemade tailgate for the 47 ford

I decided to give it kind of a 3D look. I used expanded metal and 1/4" round rod.
