Trucks are a bit heavy so don't overdo it on the cam, I have previously used a comp cam, Extreme part #12-246-3 with an Edelbrock airgap intake, which should work alright with your valve size, also a torque converter(heavy truck again) with a 2500 stall speed and a half decent gear ratio if 3spd auto 3.50 to 3.73 ratio and 3.73 to 4.10 if 4spd auto. Run a cooler on your trans always a good idea. Not the best heads though a set of vortec would be a better choice and cost effective. Oh 650 dbl pump Holley or 750 Edelbrock carb will work good on a truck. Let us know how it turns out.

82CHEVY388 Ok enough said about the heads everyone I talked to about the heads say to upgrade. Most people say go with the afr 195 but they are a little pricey. Is there any other good heads I can go with to achieve what I'm looking for without breaking the bank. Anything in the $1000 to $1200 range

Unfortunately not the best head choice for this power range, to make up the deficiencies of ancient camel hump technology to get to this power level will take more compression and more cam, that kind-of tosses the idea of low end torque and puts in top end horsepower.

I'd say you're looking at something along the lines of a Comp XE294

I need help with a cam selection

First off Im new to the site so please be patient with me. I'm building a 388 sbc for my 82 chevy lwb pickup. Just something to play with on the weekends. Its a 010 block from a 78 3/4 truck bored 60 over. I have a eagles rotating assembly that should bring it up to a 388. I have a set of camel hump heads with 2.02/ 160 valves. I need help with selecting a cam with intake and carb. I was hoping to get into the 400-450 hp range with something that had a good sound to it also. I imagine something with good tq because its a truck. Any help and suggestion will be grealty appreciated.
