390 Ford

Thanks for the replies, I don't know if the tranny is from a 390 or if it is the tranny that came with the Merc, as I'm just now starting to make plans for the drive train. thanks for the info about there being little difference in the later model of 390 engines, I'm not familiar with the engine anfd I want to build it so I have a little more go and a lot more cam. The carberator is messed up and I'm wondering if a holley would bolt up to the 390 intake?? The knowledge on this board is unbelievable and I appreciate to inpit, it keeps me from making mistakes.

jetnow1 In high school I worked with a mechanic who had an ex-state police car that
had a 3 speed and a 390. Put it in 2nd gear and it would run all day without
having to shift! It was special ordered for a police captain who wanted a manual trans and a buddy of his who was a mechanic for the police let him
know when it was going up for auction. Great drivetrain as long as you did
not overrev the engine- they were torque motors. Jim

JeffB Ford FE blocks are one of the easiest to interchange parts with, there would be no advantage to buying a later 390 rather than rebuilding the one you have.If you are not real familar with the FE's you may want to Google:mre books they have some great books that cover the interchanges and engine codes so you know what you have to work with. With very little effort they will produce some real torque so be kind to that 3 speed.

three speed tranny

If the three speed came with the other 390 you now have
, or was added to it
, and seems to work well I don't see any thing wrong with going to a newer 390. As long as it bolts up or you have an adapter plate, and you aren't building up the 390 with a lots of HP, and burning the tires up go for it.

390 Ford engine to Three speed tranny

I currently have a 55 Merc that came with a 390 Ford engine and running through a three speed ( I believe side shifter ). The engine must be rebuilt and I'm wondering if I can mount a later year 390 or there abouts Ford Engine to the tranny, as I would like to use a later engine for parts purposes. Any input will be appreciated.
