I am new to this site I am building a sbc 409 (.040 over 400) Im kinda new to the engine building I would love to put it on a dyno but just cant justify spending 400 on somebody else tuning my motor and knowing how much horsepower it makes anyway this is what I got and please bare with me I dont know all my part numbers

holley street avenger (670?)
ported edelbrock performer rpm heads stock valves 64cc chambers
holley strip dominator intake
speed pro forged pistons -4cc dish = 11-1 cr
solid roller comp xr 292
in a 509 400 block
stock polished and shot peened rods (5.7)
stock crank

anyway what do you think for hp and torque I know some of you guys are real good at this and I know everyone thinks that theyr motor makes way more than it does so dont hold back

NHRA sanctioned tracks are allowed up to a +/- 1% grade or slope to the track. IHRA uses a +/- 1/10"(?) specification. I'm not sure, but suspect that is a 1 inch in 10 foot grade change (.8%), maybe?

Anyway, that 1% looks like a lot from a distance or on TV from a wide shot. And like at this track, the track will often go "uphill" at 1% after the finish line.

Man im excited to see how it leaves on the trans brake! Me and the tranny guy put it together today. now its on me to get it in the truck and i think its ready for drag season again other than tires i just gotta talk the girlfriend into letting me buy some but i got a while before i need them. I would put the tranny in today but its cold as hell out side and i dont have a heater in the garage and its supposed to snow tonight so i wouldnt get to see what it does anyway

any advice on how to wire the button ?

i am still using column shift. my star shifter wont work with reverse manual valve body

Build a bracket to hold the button somewhere within the drivers reach but in a location it isn't likely to get bumped by accident while moving(bad things can happen inside trans if that happens). I like to use a position at the dash at arms length in front of you, like above the heater controls for example. Reason being is from reading a test on reflexes, you jerk your whole arm away from touching something(like fingers on a hot burner) faster than you move just your thumb or finger...test yourself :mwink: . You'll see a lot of winning bracket racers set up the same way - on the dash, on the roll bar above the windshield, on the windshield post, even seen one sneaky in the cigar lighter hole behind the ashtray door.

Wire the button to trigger through a 30 amp relay(like a fog or driving light relay), the transbrake pulls a lot of amps, too many for a simple momentary contact button to live with for long.

Got my tranny in today but parts store is closed so i dont have any trans fluid and i dont have everything to wire in the trans brake button and since im using the lokar dipstick that is not as long as the stock one i think ill just run it inside the cab it has to be running to check it anyway

got it all done and wired! I havent drove it, I tested the trans brake in the garage  and it stalls at 3500ish thats good i think cant wait to try it out but i gotta wait till next weekend since im outta town for work for the next week (I hate my job)

btw im only into the whole tranny 300$

That tire (MT ET Drag Radial)and the Hoosier DOT Drag Radial are pretty much equal in traction capability from what I have seen, but the Hoosier is softer and wears out faster. You won't go wrong with either one.

The guys I race with we all use the MT. I see a few others at the track with Hoosier, and one with the Goodyear Drag Radial. All seem to work well.

Could someone guesstimate the hp/tq of this setup,
350 small block 3970014
Stock crank
L2304 0.100" 030 dome pistons (forged aluminum with forged
Aluminum rods)
Comp cam xe262 cam and lifter kit
Camelhump 462 heads 2:02 /1:64?
Edelbrock performer intake
Quadrajet carb
Stock hei distributor
3speed auto tranny
3;42 rear gears
1981 camaro gutted completely
Thanks just a ball park would be appreciated

got my new tires on and got my plugs in and changed to a stock hei distributor because my pos msd was full of oil so i went to check the oil and something has been hitting the dipstick and broke it off so out comes the motor so while im at it im gonna change head gaskets and try to figure out if i had originally put in a broken spark plug or if something hit the prong on the #4 cylinder plugs looked really good other than that one

this motor is pissing me off Im about to put my 396 in it for this year at the drags

Did you or someone else forget to re-install the lower dipstick guide tube back into the block after machining??

It goes in the dipstick hole first, before the upper tube is pressed in. The lower tube guides the stick down into the pan and keeps it from coming into contact with the spinning crank. Without the lower tube the crank will hit the stick and break it off on the lower end.

Right on the full line is a common breakage point, because the stamped line makes a natural fracture/fatigue point. So that leaves about a 1-1/2" long piece in the pan.

Maybe you could fish it out with a pencil magnet through the drain plug?? Or put a magnet on the bottom of the pan to "capture" it and just leave it there until some point down the road that you have the engine out or the pan off??
