Being I'm working on a glass car right now.. No.. I don't have pictures.. But I will try and explain what I do.. First I make sure both side are very clean.. I then butt weld everything.. The key is.. Learning how to spot it hot.. You want 100% penetration.. You can practice on some scrap metal.. I weld everything a Little hot.. Getting my 100 % penetration.. Then carefully grind down the weld, Only on the outside.. When done right... You won't even know there was a patch there.. I hope this explains it..

Here's some welds taken right down.
I don't think I'll run into trouble.

Guys you are doing practice coupons are you not..when you get good penetration to the back side then you can dress the weld right down and have the strength of the weld..

Any pics of what "proper" dressing looks like?
For strength, I've been not going all the way back to level, since when you get close it is hard to tell when you are still removing weld, or the surrounding metal.

Very true shine.. I have to say, It's how you dress the weld's that have a lot to do with it.. I MIG weld everything on all the cars I do.. Never seen where it caused a problem yet.. Again.. It's in the finish work..
By the way.. Very nice car..

|cjperotti||Great job! I like the look of the door handles. Also like your heavy duty hood prop.|

its all cosmetic. opening the door is really no challenge at all. i can pull the handle without touching the door panel at all. been a year and not one scratch around that area. car does not see winter. might as well post a few shots of the car now

Iím not a fan of shaved door handles myself. But then, some door handles are just so ugly they warrant removal by any means.
I thought spitfires concept quite novel and refreshing coming up with a new approach to addressing an otherwise boring door handle. Sure there may be some problems as you mentioned Iím sure heís already aware and accepted them.
If we took into account the value of results compared to the labor and expenses for every project they would have been destined to the scrapyard before projects were started. Thatís the nature of this trade. Great results little reward.

Was the original reason the handle 'cup' was covered up, purely cosmetic? I doubt the aero advantage would be very much, if anything.
Seems labor intensive as hell for not much of a change in looks, plus it would seem the utility would be adversely affected- like real hard to open the door wearing winter gloves, good chance the paint could become marred from use, etc..

|dinger||I have re-opened this thread after some heavy editing. Guys, I have better things to do, like take a nap or watch my Dexter DVDs. One more derogatory (means no good, bad, name calling, immature) post and I suspend that member. Leave the silly arguments for the playground when you're playing dodgeball at the grade school. I will be monitoring this thread and any others I have in my duties, I am more than ready to hand out suspensions. Act like adults, please. OMT, I am sorry you had to close this thread, I should have jumped in earlier. Opinions are just that, opinions. Respect them all until you can put scientific proof on the table. And respect them then, we're all trying to be helpful.|
