I bought a singer 111 about 10 months ago at the time it was mounted on a huge homemade bench. The bench was pretty nasty and I didn't have the space to leave it sit so I took all the parts off of it and set it aside. I purchased a new table and legs and was unable to get back to the project. Today I finally started tinkering with it. I am not sure how to adjust the pedal in relation to the arm on the motor. Also my rods from the pedal to the motor do not sit in a nice vertical line but angle, is this OK? I also searched for the info but didn't find pictures. Also does anyone have a link to a picture of the oil pan I am not sure in mine is correct it looks homemade. Not sure how to position the knee lifter either, tried looking for a wear pattern on the part that contacts the machine but couldn't tell from this. Sorry for so many questions about this, I did have pictures but my house was broken into and the computer they were on is gone. Thanks for any help
The linkage needs to be as vertical and in a straight line from the motor to the pedal as possible. There should be a way to get it in that position by drilling more holes in the foot pedal to move the bracket on the pedal that attaches the pedal to the motor, or you should be able to move the pedal back and forth from left to right on the shaft that the pedal is attached to by loosening and re-tightening stops on the shaft. The "oil pan" isn't that critical as long as it keeps the machine's oil from dripping on your pants when you're sewing. I've seen people replace the metal pan with a plastic Tupperware pan if the metal one fails. The knee lifter needs to be directly under the spot where the end of it contacts the strike plate on the bottom of the machine. This too is mounted on a shaft and should be adjustable.
Here's a link for the instruction manual, but it won't have anything in it about mounting the head in the table, or the knee lifter, or attaching the motor to the pedal because there are so many different combinations of motors and tables. CLICK HERE
It's funny that this post came up because yesterday I took a look at my pedal linkage because I noticed some binding when I pressed down with my foot. The linkage was not inline with the motor linkage because the pedal bots loosened up. The pedal has a plate on it that can be loosened and shifted left and right in order to align the rod up. One I aligned it, set the pedal to the height that I want and tightened it all, my problem was solved. I'll post a picture when I get a chance.
OK it looks like I can bend the bracket attached to the foot pedal and get the linkage more vertical. On the knee lifter the pad that contacts the rod from the machine is v shaped so anywhere on the v shape is OK or is it supposed to be flat instead of v shape? So am I correct in that when the pedal is depreased the handwheel should be easier to turn? I haven't looked at the link yet but is there a tension that the motor belt should be set?
Mine is flat, not "V" shaped, but yours may be different than mine. Mine is a flat pad about 2" long with rounded ends, and it contacts the lifter mechanism in the middle. The belt does not have to be extremely tight, it should have some give to it. There is adjustment as far as the motor is concerned to tighten or loosen the belt. You may need to buy a different length belt than was used on the table your machine was on. Look at post #14 in this thread to determine belt length: CLICK HERE If you need a different belt, you can get one at any full service hardware store, you don't need to get it from a sewing machine shop.
thank you for the video. I didn't go to work today because my dog is very ill, she is finally sleeping a bit and I may get a chance to fool with the machine later.
No problem. I'm a photographer and live by the saying, "One picture says a thousand words." Take care of that dog.
