Jag Ifs

The JAG ifs is the only way to go.Like the other guys said the Jag is
cheaper & it is almost a bolt in,it is like the JAG was made for the 48-52

crownver You'd have to cut the axle tubes shorter and then order axles to fit. Not sure of the independant Explorer rear but the earlier solid ones work. I've got one coming from a 96 with 4.10 gears, Traclok, and disc brakes for my '50 F47.

pcbc so i should be able to use the 78s axle housing and order new axle shafts? and no not to many jags around here. anyone ever tried using 02 and up ford explorer independent rear suspension?

crownver You'd likely need to shorten the 9" from the 78, but I don't think the axles can be cut. You can buy new axles of the correct length. Probably not too many Jags in the wrecking yards in Iowa? Not here either.

pcbc is it possible to shorten the rearend from the 78 i think its a 9in but i could be wrong. ive heard some have tapered axle shafts but ive been looking online and all i can find is info on car axles.

pcbc just trying to do this as easy as i can. the 78 f150 was bought for parts for my dads 78 and is still has all the drive train and steering parts. so i was thinking since all those parts are paid for it would be cheaper but im assuming the width would cause to many problems. starting to think the extra money for mustang susp kit is the way to go. has anyone here know about manual rack and pinion steering?

1 ) The Jag frame is way different than the F-1 ... but the front suspension cradle fits.

2 ) The Jag rear end is independent

3 ) A 1978 F150 4x2 frame is not much of a improvement over the 49 frame IMHO. It is also too wide ... and the track width is way off. Depending on which model F150 it is ... the wheelbase could be too long also.

4 ) IF the F150 is ready for the scrap heap ... why invest time and $$$ into trying to put it under a F-1 ???

pcbc is the jag frame the same width as the f1? and is the rear end independant on that model? how hard would it be to use a 1978 f150 4x2 frame? i have one thats probly headed for scrap.

Deuce Another advantage to the Jag XJ-6 is the rear end is easily adapted to the F-1 also. Giving you disc brakes all the way around and a smoother ride ... all for low bucks ...

Plus a lot of goodies on the Jag are adaptable and the rest can be scrapped and get part of you $$$ back. ALWAYS good thing

Deuce " Handful to drive " is a subjective opinion ...

I had a 49 F1 with a SBC in it and drove it every where. It did not drive and handle like a sports car but I found it to be very adequate. It is however 60 year old technology.

I am building a 1949 M-47 Mercury pickup ( Canadian version of the Ford F-1 )

I wanted a lower stance and better brakes so I opted for a XJ-6 IFS conversion ... instead of the Pinto/Mustang II stuff. The Jag IFS is vastly stronger ... and built for the weight of a F-1 more closely than The Pinto/Mustang II stuff. The Jag also matches the wheelbase better It is also easier to adapt and no kit is required. Complete old Jags are available for the 5/6 hundred range in my area. I like to use the 1980/1986 XJ-6 models.

... the Jag XJ-6 front IFS cradle unbolts from the Jag and is the correct width for the F-1. I also went with a Explorer ( 2001 ) 8.8 rear end with disc brakes. It is the same exact width as the original F-1 rear end and has 31 spline axles, 3.73 gear ratio with a POSI.

The Jag has 4 piston disc brakes, a POWER rack and pinion steering system and the very common 5 on 4.75 wheel bolt pattern ( same as a Chevrolet )

49 f1 steering questions

hi im new to the site and have alot of questions so here it goes. does the stock suspension handle corners well and is it worth putting power steering on using the solid axle? or is mustang suspension the way to go? this truck is gunna be driven and i dont want something thats gunna be a handful to drive. any input would be great thanks.
