Gary, I think you took my post out of context. The Grandma's Cadillac statement was merely used as an example to show that building big torque numbers can be achieved without big horsepower. Not BBC vs. Cadillac. Nolan

1Gary I don't think you can compare a caddy to a 454.If memory serves me right,rod ratio's are all different and when you want torque that matters abunch.The caddy needs $$$$ aftermarket heads and still is limited in RPM where the 54 needs RPM.308 intake runners would do it for a 54 along with a matching cam to SCR's.

Kenny, if you want to build big torque you have to think smaller with everything in the combo except CR. Nolan
527 HP(aluminum heads): from $6295 578 to 615 ft lbs torque
this was the first 600 pounds/foot torque engine in the list.
so a well tuned 530 horse power 454 could do this. I was comparing my combination of a 600 horse 540 I was aware of that made 640 pounds/ foot of torque

454'S Nearly or Over 600 ft.lbs of torque

It doesn't take a 650 hp 454 to make 600 ft/lb of torque. Here are a bunch done by the same builder;

Chevy 454 - 475 hp Crate Engine Big Block Turn Key from Phoenix Engine

peanut port heads for the street

I totally agree, I think for the everyday street only guy it will give the best gas milage. I've read that even with the port mismatch at that power level, there is no problem with the mismatch. For saturday night fun in an early camaro, or truck for that matter is all I'd need to make me happy. This might be my next build project for old pickup truck.

So, the PP heads are low RPM torquers, for sure. But not total dogs.

That said, the same engine, using a Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake, Holley 950 HP carb, Comp XE284H cam and a set of Profiler 290cc aluminum heads made 564 HP @ 6100 RPM and 542 TQ @ 4900 RPM.

That's a gain of 118 HP over the smaller cam and heads. The 950 HP Holley doesn't flow anywhere near 950 CFM (said to flow less than a standard Holley 850) and the two intakes are basically the same as well (changed for a better port shape match), so the difference was mostly just the heads and cam.

I am wandering how hard will it be to acheave this with a 781 headed 454... Its going in my 82 c10
