With this being said to the "OP" yes you can use the grill from the 73 , but you will need a bumper from a 71 or 72 for your car, and to use a 73 bumper and for it to fit properly you will need 73 fenders also along with the bumper.JMO

Explain just exactly where the difference is then.
The grill will still work and you can switch the complete doghouse out and be fine, the fenders on the 73 were enlarged somewhat to aid in the safety bumper/5 mile hr bumper. The recess aera where the bumper sit's is slightly different. that's all the difference i know about and some of the mounting brackets might be allittle different also for the new style bumper. but all this can be made to work seen it done ex-specially if you have a complete car sitting there to work from. JMO
But TommyK if you know something we don't then please share it with us . The one thing i don't want to do is give someone the wrong info if i can help it anyway.

As far as looks the bumper and the grill design is alittle different, but as far as taking the whole doghouse and putting it on the 72 should fit with no problems other then lining it all up and that's anytime you do these changes. Changing the doghouse out is a straight out swap for a 72 and 73 IMHO

Common sense will tell you but you also said you had the grill in the car and it fit but not just right, And as you stated the car has been hit so i agree with the other post you will have to tweak it to get it right and then you should be fine.JMO But all and all it should fit IMHO.
Just trying to help
