spring should be compressed to
Its always nice to get a answer to what seem a simple problem.
That was nagging at me.

The way I see it is...
A. The spring should be long enough so that when the suspension goes into full droop the spring still has some load on it. (like you stated)
B. The spring should not be so long so as to bind when at full bump.
C. A softer spring with more preload is better than a stiff spring with less preload.
D. There is no "sweet spot" for springs. Most springs are constant rate so they can be run anywhere as long as the above parameters are met.
E. If you are using a variable rate spring, you will likely not want the "soft" part of the spring to be stacked or bound when at normal ride height. But this depends on the rate of the stiffer part of the spring. There are many variables to determine in the use of progressive rate springs.

Is there a percentage of the free length height a spring should be compressed to ?
Have a Coil spring question.
I am finishing up custom IFS I building.
Have no idea what the final weight is going to be yet.
Would like to fabricate upper and lower mounting points for springs temporary
for clearance fitment.
Is there a percentage of the free length height a spring should be compressed
to at ride height?
Or just 1", 2", ....etc. greater than the maximum rebound length when installed?
I know about Spring rats, angel, position and wire size Etc. in relation to vehicle weight.
But I think I heard some where a spring should be compressed to a certain
percentage of its free length at ride height if possible?
It has to be some design of conventional Coil Spring not coil over!
There is no other vehicles I can directly reference it to.
