Rollback trailer plans

Thanks to those who have posted positive and helpfull replies to "blockaidrunner". I am also looking for ideas, plans, drawings, descriptions, & photos to help me build a rollback trailer. I have most of the raw material, 8x24' aluminum truck flatbed deck and frame, two dexter axles, Complete 17' Isuzu rollback wrecker (blown 4cyl Turbo), Tig, stick and gas welders and etc. I saw someone post that they were pulling apart a rollback trailer for painting and was willing to shoot some photos (now I can't find that link) this would be most helpful. I don't care about discussions concerning patents ... this will be a one-off build for my own private use (not commerical or for resell) I will be happy to share photos of my stuff and project photos once I start construction. I would also like to discuss constructive ideas with anyone j.o.

PapaG Very unique idea. I was in the oilfield truck and trailer business and I can say this is a very good idea. Ii crawled under one of these it is a great idea that the person who thought this had one of those kinds of inventive mind. Most of it is stock parts with the use of them that makes it good. And no hydraulics

When I crawled under it I went hummmmm Like the guy that invented it. It did show that it was patented on the it. U-Haul had a patent on their trailers at one time... But that is long ago... To the person who owns the patent, you need to think what you are going to do once the patent runs out.

I knew a person that made pull types trailers, nothing that was different other than he made a better trailer better than most every body else... Cost a little more for the quality in his trailer. The oilfield crunch of the '80 killed a lot of very good businesses.

Running off on a rainy day, anyone want some used screws, lol

I agree, there where a few good people that took their time to try and help me with this, even getting me a older paten and for them to do that, that alone says a lot of the kind of people on this site, it donít get any better than that. Again I would like to thank everyone of you for your time and efford.
The thing with me is Iím lucky enough to have access to a small steel supply for free( as long as I donít abuse it). I ended up breaking my back twice and the power Co. I worked for was real good, given me 2 years to try and get right (physically, no help mentally, lol). So I had to retire with 23 years, but really needed 26-27 years for full retirement. Then a year later my beautiful wife of 35 years, had a fatal accident, which left me in a mess finically, lol. So I finally dug my way out of that hole, but social security donít leave much at the end of the month for our boy toys, lol. The bills are paid and I eat everyday, which is a whole lot better than some of our American brothers.
So when I saw that trailer on U-Tube, I was pumped. That is just what I need to help me move things around and while I have no desire to go into business, it could be used to add a little to my SS maybe occasionally. Shoot I bet it would take 6-8 months to build one even if I had the plans, lol. Iím a lot slower now with this back trouble, but I refuses to give in to it and become a couch potato, as Iíve seen so many do. The secret is keep on pushing, but I admit I do have to surrender once or twice a month, lol.( like today, thatís why Iím writing all this crap, board).
I have somewhere around 16 screws (more like lag bolts that are every bit ľ X 2 Ĺ ), plus a spacer to replace one of my shattered vertebrate. I canít remember the exact cost of those screws, but it was in the thousands for each one. I have 4 screws that were replaced back on my 14th surgery. If I could sell the 4 at 50% off because theyíre slightly used (only 2 years) I bet I could get me a pretty good use roll-back trailer, LOL.
I have to apologize to everyone for this post, because Iím just cutting fool and stuck inside form the rain and I get cabin fever fast, lol. Itís insane and we wonder why medical cost is so high, but each screw looks no more than a high quality stain steel and the cost was best I can remember were $3000-$4000 each and the vertebra spacer is titanium, I hate to guess the cost of that.
Well the rain stopped and Iíve turned a hotrod forum into a medical forum, lol.
Seriously Iíd like to thank everyone for all their help, didnít get what I needed but it wasnít because I had a good group guys helping. Please keep me in mind if plans ever come to the market for sale and my hat off to to the inventor. THE END, lol.

No Luck

A few people tryed to help but it seems no plans are around for this type trailer for the person that wants to build his own. I still would like to put something together for myself but I guess I will just watch craigs list for now.

This is one of the best forums I seen

I donít know anything about that paten stuff. I just a old boy with a really bad back that has never been one that can just sit around. My beautiful wife of 35 years passed away a couple of years back and the best medicine for me is to stay busy peddling. I sure your right it be a lot cheaper buying one, but that just not a option for me. I was hoping to build one to load and unload my small tractor and not have to deal with them heavy ramps. From looking at that paten, I doubt I can figure it out anyway, canít figure out the tongue works or what size bearing to use. I canít afford to try several brgs. Hey, I just thought it would be nice to have, guess Iíd better find another project to do because Iím not going to turn into a couch potato, lol.
If plans ever come to the market, I sure would love to buy a set, so please keep me in mind and thanks for all yallís help, great forum with some good guys.

why reinvent the wheel.

It's a lot better to buy something that has been debugged, has all the tooling to make it flat, level, square ,and plumb. Someone that buys a semi load of steel gets a lot better price than I can. Unless you like breathing welding smoke and getting spatter burns, almost killing yourself trying to turn it upside down to finish the welds it's better to sell the old trailer and buy a nice new shinny one.

I had Attorneys Trust me they confused the hell out of me too. For some reason they were lead to believe that the patent was extended to 2012. I not if it was because it is in the middle of a lawsuit or what. This will be checked into. The info was not just coming from just me or the inventor.
Doesn't really matter. I build these trailers, I do a good good at it and I will continue to do so. And for anyone that is going to try to build one for themselves, all I can say is good luck and be careful. They are not as easy as you may think. Alot can go wrong. lol
Now can we move on?? I'm sorry if I offended you but I am very proud of my new company and its products. We are going to get these things back out into the public with quality and integrity.

A-bar D ???

The patent drawing does not show the pivoting front V hitch. I was trying to unload some ocean containers off my 3 car hauler , chained them to a tree. and when i drove ahead they got to the tail end, they lifted the rear wheels of my dually off the ground. Do you have the pivoting V hitch as a patented new and improved version ? or is the u tube video's now public comain. ? ?

patent protection ?

I had a friend that had several patents, The first one was for recovering precious materials used in the computer chip industry. The problem he had was that other companies used his patent drawings and information and duplicated his process. Since the equipment was inside factories he had no way of discovery of who copied his ideas. The next process he developed had TWO important details. First he had a patent on part of the process, second he had the IMPORTANT secret ingrediant. No one could make it work from trying to copy what was patented.

Hay, thanks a lot, not sure I have the smarts for this, but it will give me something to stay busy with, lol. Beats laying around watching TV, lol.

TubeTek The point is that you're claiming coverage under a patent that's expired.

Any patent issued before June 8,1995 is valid for the longer of either 20 years from the date of filing, or 17 years from the date of issue.

20 years from the date of filing would be August 10, 2010, which has passed.

17 years from the date of issue would be March 3, 2009, which has passed.

Patents ARE NOT in effect for 20 years from the date of issue as you seem to think, and neither you nor the inventor decides the rules. Uncle Sam takes care of that.

What is my interest in this? Nothing more than the posting of accurate information.

OTOH, if you bought this business recently, and do honestly believe you have a patent that's in effect, you might want to talk to an attorney familiar with such stuff if part of what you purchased was a patent with some supposed value.

One thing worth remembering regarding internet postings..... As soon as you mention the word "patent", a person who's wondering how something might work knows immediately that there's an explanation of the operation, and drawings of the device, publicly available. Finding that information takes a couple minutes at the most for anyone familar with how to look for patent information. Don't mention a patent and the average person is unlikely to go looking for one.

Very good you found it and posted it. Yes it was Filed in 1990 and the date of the patent is dated 1992. It expires in 2012 and it has a new 'rivsed patent pending.

Now what is your point???? And why are you so interested in this???? I bought the company, I have all the paper work and contracts, and everything that I am doing is truthful and legal.

Now if you feel different about it then feel free to contact ME and discuss it. If You can find the patent then Im sure you can find my number.

And if that is not good enough, Call Mr Swanner himself. He is 88 but loves to talk trailers.

Have a nice day.

TubeTek Alan,
Here is the patent information on the rollback trailer.

Maybe you can get some information that'll help you by downloading the sketches and description of how it works.

The patent was filed in August of 1990, which means it would have expired in August of 2010 under the standard 20 years from date of filing rules of the USPTO.

FWIW, it is a violation of Federal law to make a public claim that an item you are selling is patented unless that item is indeed covered by an active patent. Perhaps A Bar D would like to come back and show a reference to some other patent he holds exclusive rights to since it appears this patent by Melvin Swanner, which he refers to on another forum, would seem to be in the public domain.
