I buy 50lbs bags of black abrasive blasting sand from the local menards for like 5 or 10 bucks for doing blasting on my V8 Beetle http://www.v8beetleresource.com

I also have a fancy sand blaster:

And a highly advanced abrasive collection system:

But it does a great job, even with my 5hp 30 gallon air compressor. I just wire wheel as much of the rust and junk off before sand blaster so it isn't quite as slow going:

ahahha.. Now that's a setup!

I don't know how you have the patience.. I had a large 2 pump 2 motor compressor (Which I need gone! Someone come buy it!! ;) ) and I even went so far as to buy a pressure blaster to use with it. I got about 1 foot on my car and called it a day and sent it out.

clean, sifted sand from home depot is what we use in our blast cabinet. $4 a bag, works well out of the bag. they have med and coarse available.
Any concerns about silicosis? Or in the quantities you use, it is not a concern?

It seems that using silica as an abrasive is not allowed in Germany, Britain, Sweden or Belgium for this reason. OSHA still allows it.

wet blaster

I have a wet blaster that hooks up to my 3500 psi pressure washer, It was about $80 from northern tool. NO dust using it . I haven't done anything large with it..I have about a yard of sand left in my trailer . My step daughter had her house stuccoed and I let them haul material and use my mixer The old mixer needs blasted to remove old concrete spills and repainted the wet blaster makes a mess everythere that I have to hose down.

If you were giving the OP an answer, then my opologies. But your reply was right after mine, so I assumed your response was to mine.
I have only used sand and obviously want something better, and I'm trying to get information.
The New age claim is:
New Age Blast Media is a safer alternative to sandblasting medias including sand, coal slag, and other minerals that may contain heavy metals or silica.
Cleaner: Manufactured from 100% Recycled Container Glass. Directly helps reduce landfill waste and limits the use of more toxic slags. Non reactive and inert. Can be used near and around water.
Safer: Dust is classified by OSHA / NIOSH as "nuisance" dust. Contains less than 1% free silica unlike most coal slags and has virtually none of the OSHA identified Heavy / Toxic Metals assoicated with slags and some other mineral abraisives.
Faster: Crushed glass delivers a natural, whiter metal finish that many other sandblasting abrasives. Significantly less embedment issues, up to 5 times less than slags. Dust is translucent, which allows for increased visibility and operator production!

I use the crushed glass and I believe it cuts better and with less air pressure than other media I have used. Play sand is not screened or graded so it clogs the blaster..Regular sand takes more air and media to work well in my opinion so it saves nothing..

This seems to be a much better and safer alternative for blasting abrasives. They claim by using the fine grit, if the pressure is cut to 50 PSI, it will clean sheet metal without warping

Has anyone used it? You don't get the contaminates on the metal with it, and its only $8 per 50 lb bag

Lots of guys are using the crushed glass, it works great and does not have either the health risks or the salt contamination that naturally occurs in most sands.
