1948 ford 2dr sedan
When i was 16 yr old (1957) a friend had a1948 ford 2dr sedan. Well he was going to build a hot rod. You know put in a 57 chev duntoff dual quad 283. Well one night before we tore the old flat head out 4 of us decided we would drive the ol flathead until we blew it up. So we got a couple of six packs and took to the road. the four of us took turns driving that flathead any way we could to blow er up. As I remember the top speed was around 65, left her in first gear with the pedal to the metal for soooo long and she just kept a going. So after four hours or so and some more six pacs. We drove the car back to the house and we all went home to bed.

later flathead trans
You could try to find a later overdrive and open drive line transmission, the 48 is a closed torque tube , trucks use open drivelines by mixing merc, ford bell housing clutch parts and you could run any of the 50's od transmissions. might have to do some crosmember clearance work but keep the 9 in rear. mabe 370-389 gears.

|beek15853||Ok, I guess I worded that in a way that ended up being a dumb question. haha. I know that the 9" will withstand the flathead and the three-on-the-tree transmission, what I am concerned about is wanting more out of my car once it is on the road. I've never driven the car with the original setup, so I am not sure what the top speed will be on the highways, or how well it will climb the hills. I am definitely keeping the flathead, I am looking for some insight on the stock transmission and if I should just update to the T-5 now. I am NOT looking for fuel economy or I would be driving a Fiesta! I have the IFS and the rearend, so I don't want to be stuck with a car that has a top speed of 50 MPH.|

1948 Ford stock engine/tranny with Ford 9" rear end
I have a 1948 Ford Business Coupe that I started to make into a Hotrod about 10 years ago. I have so far installed IFS, Ford 9" rearend and began the Chevy 350/350 conversion. Now that I am older and somewhat wiser, I no longer want the Chevy engine/tranny in my car and will be going back to the Flathead V8 and three on the tree transmission. My question is this: Will the original powerplant (engine/tranny) be enough for that rearend? If not, then I will do the T-5 conversion and still keep the Flathead. I just don't want to get this thing back together and find out that the car won't climb the hills here in Western PA.
