It's bit a long time since I had one apart but most long shaft steering boxes have a cover-bearing plate with 4 or 5 bolts that you take off to get apart apart and the shaft and gear (one piece) come out the bottom some of those gear boxes were recirculating ball type I think G M use them a few years before Ford, A ball type as a lot of ball bearing balls that are inside , don't lose any when you take it apart. The slotted screw is used to set end plac cleaarance-bearing preload.

need advice on pulling shaft out of steering box
I'm working on a 50 ish (58) ford i have everything loose but i can not pull the steering shaft out of the steering box, there is no RAG joint on the 58, i thought the shaft was splined and would just pull out, what am i missing here....On the bottom of the S. box is what looks like a slotted head for a very larg screw driver, i wonder if that has to be unscrewed???
