I remember an article in HotRod that appeared in the late 60s, as I recall. It was a street-legal dragster built by Chauvin Emmons. I can't remember if it was a slingshot dragster, or more of an altered roadster, but teenage me simply wanted it. I have forgotten the power, but it ran 8.94/174. Don't ask me how I remember numbers. Anyway, I have no idea if a Google search would turn that up or not. Quite a few videos of him on YouTube, but I didn't see this car.

Street legal dragsters remembered
Several members of the old street racers I knew had barely street legal cars. Ralph had a 57 Chevy hardtop with a fiberglass tilt front end, chrome straight front axle, tubbed for 15" wide slicks and a blown 427 Chevy with a super T-10. He only street raced because he kept getting kicked off drag strips for going to fast without a rollcage.
Gary had an Anglia with a Hilborn injected 327 and B&M Hydro with a narrowed Pontiac rearend, spooled and also tubbed for big meats. It did have a full cage in it which made climbing in and out loads of work. The seats were close to the back window but that thing was scary fast and it didn't have any floorboards other than the two places where the driver and passenger could place their feet. He also had a 69 GTO but didn't race it much after I tromped him in my 68 RoadRunner several times, besides, it was his wife's baby.
There were several others, including a 70 SS454 Chevelle Bob drove that was an alcohol car, he'd have his wife drive his truck with a bunch of 5 gallon cans of alcohol in back to supply him.

|Rickracer||I've seen a funny car style Vega at Old Town in Kissimme Fl. quite a few times, the sheet metal interior was done in a tan tweed, but appeared to have very little padding, just enough to make it look good. I don't remember for sure what it had for power but I think it was an injected SBC. They displayed it with the body up, I never got to see it make the cruise though. It was appropriately named "Nightmare on ANY Street".|

there was an article in the english streetmachine a looong time ago about a streetlegal 57 chevy that had a alcohol burning funnycar engine in it , open exaust and would make about a block on a tank of alcohol
it took a pitcrew to start it though

there was a street legal dragster in so cal back in the late 70's
I think I still have the mag
TOP 50 wildest STREET CARS hot rod
I ALSO I OWNED the OPEL FUNNY car that was previously mentioned here
AND WAS VOTED into that mag being one of the top 50 wildest street cars
in the altered trim at the time
the guy that built it was STEVE GROUP out of ohio
I talked to him just last year about the car
and I seen somone had the artical when I was selling it
it also had an altered and funny car body used the same chassis
and YES it was street legal
it is now in cal near Arizona
I also have plans on building a TOP FUEL replica for the street/track
I had a TOP FUEL bike that had a 21 inch wide rear pro street tire on it
but we couldn't get it to turn corners real well
so adapted a side car to it that looked like the front of a late model stock car
I had it for years even won the rats hole show in daytona with it in 98
and went to ESSEN GERMANY
but sold it to move on

|ol'rodder||Great thread, you guys have already posted pics of the more commonly known ones, although I have never seen the SAAB before. Here are some that haven't been shown yet. The first one is Corvair powered and was built by Dick Berg, Lemon Grove CA and they used to put 1500 miles a month! on it. The T Bucket was built by Bob Brody of Henrietta NY. The '70 Nova was built by John Franks of Rochester MI from the "Hawaiian" AA/FC that crashed at the '69 Winternationals, he rebuilt it and replaced the body with a Nova, the engine is a supercharger 427 Chev, oh, and the roll cage was widened for two people but real close so you would be thinking twice about who rode with you. I'm sure there were more....keep them coming.....and SOMEBODY build one!|

Street legal dragster
Back about 42 years ago when I ran with the Orange County Street Racers, Bob, a friend of mine bought what was one of the precursors of the funny cars from a dealer in L.A. It was a 65 Mustang fastback with a tubbed, tube chassis and acid dipped body. The floorboards were aluminum and it did have two fiberglass seats. It ran a 427 side-oiler stroked to 480 cubes with Hilborn injection, B&M Hydro, Cherry Bombs tied directly to the headers. The noise was almost unbearable inside this beast as we ran around looking for races, but hey, we were young and didn't think of the consequences. The windows were Plexiglas and the side ones opened with a piece of nylon strapping that had two snaps.
We added a windshield wiper confiscated from a jeep so we had a wiper for the driver. We then wired up lights, sort of. You didn't really have blinkers, you'd have to toggle the switch back and forth to make them work. The gauges consisted of a tach, water temp and oil and fuel pressure. We spent hours with me tailing him to tell him what speed he was going at what RPM then made up a sheet so you knew approximately how fast you were going. His rear tires were 16" wide Goodyear slicks that we had grooved with a grinder so they would meet the minimum DOT requirements. It only had brakes on the back axle which could make stopping fun but it still had the chute on the back, just above the license plate.
On a whim, we took it to O.C.I.R. one Wednesday for bracket racing and I ran a 9.88 @ 145 in it's so-called street trim. Bob was ticked because his time was 10.10. We stopped at another racers and proceeded to down a few brews, only Bob got into the whiskey too. We went to leave and Bob couldn't start it. I told him I'd drive and we changed places only before attempting to start it, I turned on the fuel pump, something Bob forgot. A few blocks from his house, we were stopped at a light when this GTO pulled up next to us and revved his engine. Bob smiled and said, "Take him!" At the green, I hit the gas and side slipped the clutch which pulled the front end up, throwing him into the back. I never let up, hitting second breaking the tires loose for a nice chirp and as the front end finally touched the asphalt as I hit third, I looked in the mirror to see where the goat was only to see nothing but red flashing lights.
The officer wrote me for exhibition of speed and the next week I went to court and plead guilty with explanation. I told the judge I was only driving because my friend had too much to drink and wasn't used to the clutch. He looked down at me and mumbled, "You damn kids and your motorcycles" then said, "$25 and next time watch what your doing." Later my dad told me there used to be a motorcycle called the Mustang and he guessed that's what the judge thought I was driving, thank God. But that was the days when the air was dirty and sex was clean and 130 octane was 30¢ to 35¢ a gallon.
