SSedan64 You don't need the Speedo Cable connected but, you do need the Speedo driven gear & Bullet/Housing as Crosley said above.

Crosley Some of these retaining bolt holes use a 1/4 x 20 bolt, some are metric with 6mm x 1.0 thread.

the speed-O gear does more than spin the cable. It also splashes oil onto the bushing for the drive shaft yoke.

Cape Cod Bob The only stupid question is the one not asked. It could be the threads in the hole need to be chased or the bolt you tried is bunged up. I would try a different bolt. Mine takes a 1/4 x 20. It may well be a metric so get some various sizes at the hardware store and try em.

Speedometer Cable Bolt

I got my roadster going and ran into a lot of leaks the newest is the old speedometer cable which had been cut off fell out of the TH350 transmission case. I am going without a speedometer as I will use my TomTom system instead. Anyway the bolt that held the old speedometer cable in place is now missing. I want to build block off plate and hold it in with this bolt. It seems to be metric. Does anyone know what size it is or do I go to the hardware store and buy 3/4 size and thread count? I tried a 1/4 course and it seemed to stop after one turn. This might sound like a stupid thread but I don't want to screw up the housing by bolting the wrong one in.
