Always begin with the most cubic inches you can muster if you're looking for a combination that will pull like Jack the Bear on pump gas. My best advice for a street or street/strip motor would be to look for a combo that makes at least 400ft/lbs of torque at 2000 rpm, then reaches peak torque at 3500-4500 rpm, depending on the rear gear ratio.
There are a couple of 400 combos on this list of motors that I Dyno-simmed.
There are 108 combinations listed here. Knock yourself out....

|dinger||Build it to a 383 or 400 and call it what you like. Chevy built 402's and called them 396's, why not you?|

396 SBC Build
Origionaly I thought it would be cool to build a 427 SBC and put the 427 emblems on my Gen I Camaro. Get some people scratching there head a bit. Soon after I realized the Gen I never came with a 427 only a 396 so change of plan lets do the same deal but with the 396 ... make it a little more true to the year, ha!
The question becomes do I build a stroked 350 up to a 396, or build a destroked 400 down to a 396. I have both blocks sitting in my shop so getting a 400 isn't a problem. It's more a question of ease, cost and reliability ... oh and performance!
