but it would be a cheap way to get a set of gears and a 31 spline carrier
there is a chance it will be close and maybe between the two rears, you can put something together without having to buy too many parts

|SSedan64||Very doubtful, you would still need to check Pinion preload, Gear backlash, and Wear/Mesh pattern when swapping Ring & Pinion and Diff. You could start with the stock Shims & go from there.|

|Mac88||Another question just for learning. So if I pulled a 8.8 rearend with 3L73 gears out of an ford explorer, could the entire assembly be swapped into a Mustang 8.8 without messing with the shims or bearings, just a straight swap? Not the entire axle, just the gear assembly and pinion?|

This Link is for a GM 8.875" 12-Bolt Diff rebuild, the Ford 8.8" Diff is basically the same style Rear. It's a very detailed Build so it should help you out.

Using a Solid Pinion Spacer would make the Install much easier, you don't have to worry about all the torque required for that Crush Sleeve.

I realized what I said after I posted that. So, I did'nt cancel the order, and now I have 7.5 in. rearend layingin my garage. More junk for my wife to fuss at me about. Who knows, maybe it will be needed one day.

Just found my own answer. Out of a Ford Ranger, 7.5. Oh well, maybe I can still cancel my order and use the gears. They are 3.73s.

Friend of mine just showed up about an hour ago saying he had something for me. It was a rearend, eventhough I've already ordered a gear set. But the id tag reads as follows
S390D 373 A75 8E04
Can anyone tell me what this is out of? He knew I was looking for a set of 3.73 gears. But I'm just curious for my learning curve, is this an 8.8 in. rearend and would it have worked in my 88 Mustang 5.0?

I posted this a while back, and I got a little feedback. I just wanted to run it by everyone one more time. I have a '88 Mustang with 4.56 gears installed. I bought a set of 3.73s and a install kit to replace the 4.56 gears currently in it. I'm somewhat mechanically inclined, and I just wanted to ask could this be done in a home garage? I dont drive the car everyday, so it's no rush to get it back together. Basically, I use it as a learning tool. And does anyone know if there's a posting anywhere with a step by step walk-thru on how to do it? I've seen a few, but they're not very detailed.
