surpip06 i whent ahead and got the SB2 thaks for the advise on that im going to lower the CR to around 11.5 with some pistons convert it to wet sump any ideas on what the 421 with that cr will do hp wise? im shure it all depends on the rest of the setup but any guesses? going to run a 850 carb for now until i can get a 1000 body for it, 1 7/8 try y headders grind a cam for a 7/4 swap im kind of clueless on cam tech so any sugestions? thanks agin

surpip06 well its not like im going to spin it to 8k evry chance i get i guess its because im kind of an over builder i probibly whont do it but good to know i can i alredy bought an SB2 aluminum block 421 that made around 700HP all the way up to 8500 i do plan on autocross ing the car so being able to stay in gears longer would be nice like ive said before tho i agree with yall woulda been better ways to go about it but im staying with the SBC bace i just have too much invested in the setup now to start fresh agin and im not going to build the whole thing up myself i plan on having a good mashine shop work the long block for me

why do you want to spin an engine to 8500 rpm when you can design it to function at a much lower rpm and make the same power. Longevity deals exponentially with RPM. What are you doing with this Datsun that you want it to be spinning to 8500 rpm. Valve springs are gonna take a beating on a daily basis and so will the rods, and crank, and valve train. Seems like a complete waste of time and money. If I were new to engine building I wouldn't consider building an engine like you have described. If you are new to engine building to design an engine to spin 8500rpm without coming apart will cost thousands in having a good machinist blueprint, clearance, and assemble the engine. On top of the cost of all the parts. Shoot for a 500hp 383. In a 2800lb car you will have plenty of problems with just getting it to go straight. I agree with everyone else I don't see the point in designing this build around a 350 if thats what your heart desires. Find a factory OHC motor like a modular engine or some import v8.

surpip06 i alredy bought a SB2 421CI dart aluminum block 11:1 CR 700HP @8500 for 10K so that takes up most of my reinlistment bonus rith there lol but yeah i deff agree with you that might be an option down the road just for pure wow factor a blower or turbo setup is in the plans some day as well i judt hope the rest of the car holds up to the power

ARAO 32 valve

I might be a bit late to make this suggestion, but I think it would be neater to have arao engineering cut you up a set of there heads with the sb2 intake and exhaust layout, this way you could have the best of both for the sbc and not have to mess with the diffrent sb2's cam setup. I think a 671 huffer would also go well hanging out of that little Datsun

also, once in a while I have seen some used sets of the other companys version Dominion 32 valve sbc heads for sale online so that maybe something to keep an eye out for to save some coin.

ap72 You'll need a cam change too if you want to run it on the street. Something that idles decently will probably drop peak power down to about 6500rpm... so spinning it as high as you want won't do anything but makes noise. Some people like noise though.

surpip06 yeah I've built a couple SBC's before and I've got a nice snap on digital TQ wrench haha but yeah i get ur point was looking on yellow bullet didn't find much was asking around but im sure there must be some builders on here that have done some SB2 work for a street application? how much are the SB2 pistons for a SB2 normally domed for a 14;1 CR how much of a change do you need to lower the cr buy 3 points give or take? flat tops? agin thanks for the help

AutoGear Im at work so I can't get access to a lot of stuff; but Speed Talk forums and Yellow Bullet forums seem to have the most specific info on these. and

This is some kinda finicky stuff, you really shouldn't be assembling it in your shed with a TQ wrench your neighbor uses for a breaker bar. Go slow and ask lots of questions. We'll all help you out, just as long as you 'pay it forward'

surpip06 how streetable are these sb2 motors the one i found on racing junk has 14:1 CR so obviously cant run that on the street so i need a set of pistons whats a good street CR to shoot for? any other problems streeting a SB2?

AutoGear Theres several types of SB2 stuff (Short track vs. Daytona stuff) so do your homework. Also, if the heads need to be opened up, you should find a shop (probably in NC) that has experience with doing these. Theres a guy running a rail here that took out his $40k motor and went SB2; he gained weight, but the durability and power is a better trade off for him. Do your homework before you plunk down the ca$h. Thanks for your service; get home safe.

surpip06 wow yeah thanks alot man i think im going to go with a whole SB2 motor seems to be exacly what i whant i found one on racing junk guy willing to park with one for 12K aluminum dart block dry sump 14:1 800HP and spins to 8500 i think im going to go with that and take a hit on power, lower the CR so i can run 93 11.5:1 sound about right? how much will that hurt the power? thanks for your input autogear

AutoGear youre going to do what you want and thats fine. Theres a reason that arao style head has beer around for a long time and Ive never seen a set in person. Personally, you dont need a used nascar motor, just the top end. There are way WAY more guys running a set of SB2 heads and intake and easily pushing your goals. One of our 4spds is behind one and the guy winds it up like grand dads DZ302. Personally the Arao stuff makes good conversation, but the application makes me nervous. id say a 370 - 380'' or so aftermarket shortblock with SB2 top end (prepped by people familiar w. Them) gets you there with cash left over. thanks for your service.

surpip06 i agree a used ls7 would be a great motor to stick in it, if i had the money at the time i probibly would have gone that route but i have way to much invested in the setup i alredy have (tranny, k member fuel system exhaust) to ditch it all and go with a ls set up i am looking into getting a used chevy nascar motor no sutch luck so far andi agree with daniel it is way overdone but there is a good reason for it no denying that i have been in contact with ARAO Dart and Boyd's racing engines in OK and the general consencus is a 372CI would reach my power goals rev to 8k easy and cost around 15 grand coupled with my t-56 and a 3000 lb car/driver should make for some serious fun
