Motors are electric , engines burn fuel, both convert a source of energy to a kinetic energy or form of work ie: horsepower. Neither one "Makes" its own power, they both consume it.

By your definition, would gasoline powered engines also not be engines? They do not produce their own power. It is the fuel which carries the energy...not the engine. Same for the electric "motor". Both, it seams to me, are simply tools for conversion of a fuel or an energy.

31 Ford here With 88 Gm TPI Engine/Motor, Pretty much just up and quit and will only start with WOT. Maybe the GM engine fighting with the Ford chassis donknow. I'm just now learning all the Abbreviations and what they do out of necessity, Man, MAP, IAC, TPS, ECM, etc etc..what they do, and what values each should be at, Overwhelming for this old dog, but slowly getting it! This I'm sure has been heard before, that old carb. is looking mighty fine about now. First time in 20000 miles the car has let me down and no way to fix it on the road., So i'm glad to find this thread and see what I can learn! Thanx Brian

Without an oxidizer and ignition system the fuel just sits in a tank. OOPS

I like engine electronics best- because not all electronic need to be used on fuel injected engines nor do they need to be permanently installed on a running engine.
As far as motors vs engines- there is no definitive difference- get over it.
I think the title works fine. Seems like most of the confusion is coming from people reading the title incorrectly?
This forum deals with modern engines controlled by electronics, which I think is evoked well enough in the title.
Engine electronics might lead people to think this forum is only for the electronic portions of an engine. But there are the more traditional components to consider (camshafts, heads, etc) that we'd want to cover in here, knowing it's a modern motor.
I wouldn't want people having to split forums to post about an LS1 camshaft in the main engine section, and then come over here to discuss their MAP sensor. Know what I mean?
But you could be right. That's why I added "unless this forum IS just for late model EFI equipped engines". At this point I'm not sure what the definition is for " Modern Electronic Engines"- as it pertains to this forum.
I would take it to mean electronic engine controls as opposed to their analog counterparts, like EFI vs. carb. Or distributorless ignition systems vs. a distributor, but would it also include HEI ignition and only exclude points? Or would the HEI not be considered to be part of "Modern Electronic Engines".
Or is it for late model vehicles w/emissions equipment that are often asked about? Or all of the above?
I'm not starting anything here. I'm just wondering what is included and excluded, or will "we" know simply by whether it appears here or not?

I think we're over complicating it a bit. I think we should let things fall where the may for the most part and see how it ends up. I'd expect to see more questions in this subforum related to modern engines, that come fuel injected, that not. I believe that 95% of what we'll see will be injected. But rather than being exclusive those running some other system that includes a lot of electronics, it's probably better to be inclusive, but acknowledge where the bulk of future posts will come from.

As for the title of the forum, a rose by any other name... and even if someone misses this forum as being where their question belongs, it will end up here if it belongs here because at the end of the day, y'all will be the ones who decide what goes where.
I like the idea of this type of thread. It has been needed for quite some time. Electronic sensors, switches, relay's, and wiring, including ECM/PCM's all come under this heading, in my book.
Admittedly I thought this section was originally going to be about cars with electric or hybrid drivetrains... Maybe I'm the only one that considers that "electronic engines" though.
maybe you need to add "controlled" to the middle of the title :smash:
