Motor and transmission are back in! Just 6 dozen more things to finish up. Power brake assembly will be here tomorrow I hope.

spacytracy I am hoping that you are wrong. Looks like yours is a mustang 2 front end. What transmission did you use for your build? I am just going off of what others have done in the past with Camaro sub frames. Anyway, thinking that a lower center of gravity is better? As for the speedy comments, I'm down to one car between my wife and I so speed is critical.

ogre your pontiac to chevy adapters may mount the motor too low in the truck
since your obviously a skilled fabricator and speedy
you might want to do something like this

1957 Chevrolet 3100 Truck Firebird sub frame graft

Making some good headway on the Firebird sub frame graft. Everything is welded in and painted. Just waiting for the Pontiac to Chevy motor mounts to come from Summit. Lots more to do, but should be much nicer to drive. I've posted everything with pictures on my project journal.

Day 3 1957 Chevrolet 3100 Truck Camaro Sub Frame Surgery

Been making some pretty good headway on this Firebird sub frame graft. If you have any interest I've been posting my step by step progress with pictures on my project journal. Might make it a little easier for the next guy.

1957 Chevrolet 3100 Camaro subframe implant

So day before yesterday I am pulling out of my brothers condo complex in my 1957 3100 truck onto a secondary road. Just started making a left turn when the steering column seized up solid, no left no right. I turned so hard that the factory welded nuts tore loose from the 70's something steering column to the column drop. The ignition wiring tore loose too, so now no steering and a dead engine. I was able to wrestle the truck to the side of the road and call for AAA towing. Got the truck home and unbolted the column, (what was left of it), and discovered that the PO had drilled too large of a hole to couple the column to the original steering box and the shaft had sheered off just above the box. Had I been on a busy road or the freeway this would be my obituary. Tore the front clip off the truck and pulled the engine today. That 81 Firebird front sub frame assembly that has been waiting for the right time to be implanted into the truck just got moved up on the priority list. I have been taking photos along the way and plan on posting the surgery in my project journal. Wish me luck!

dsraven What you will need to know is the width, gear ratio, is it a posi or not, what condition is it in, does it come with brakes etc, is it drum or disc brakes, will it have e brake cables etc. Then, remember that the pumkin maybe offset so the axles are different lengths, what size and spline are thw ales, and the banjo is possibly offset so it may interfere with current exhaust system etc.also you will need to weld on some spring pads to match your truck. If disc brakes you will need a master cylinder to match as well. I used a ford 8.8 from an explorer that came with disc brakes, posi, 3.73 ratio and large diameter axles. Pulled it from picknpull for cheap. Came with park brake cables and almost new brakes. Couldn,t go wrong for the price.

Rear end Options

What do you guys think about a ford 9 inch rear end for my 55 3200? I have an opportunity to pick one up for $120. Is it a good fit for the truck? Is it a good price? What would be a better option? Thanks

CHeck out the ford 8.8 rear axle from a ford explorer. They are pretty tough and easy to redrill the axle flange to whatever wheel pattern you want.
The gas tank was already moved my mother in law and her boyfriend but it seems like a somewhat crappy job. I am definitely going to have to take it out and do it correctly
