If you've not yet done so, get the timing sorted out first. The initial timing, total timing and vacuum advance has to work in concert for best performance and economy. The cam will have a lot to do w/the timing requirements along with other engine mods, the type and material of the cylinder heads, the compression ratio, final drive ratio, vehicle weight, how you drive it, the gas quality, etc.

Once the timing is right, start in on the carb. The performance and plug color are good indicators of the carb tune.

Your 1405 uses the Edelbrock p/n 1479 recalibration kit

Use the Edelbrock Owners Manual to tune the carb. In most cases I recommend that the carb be baselined back to stock to begin with. The 1405 came with:

100 x 95 jets
70 x 47 rods
Orange (5) step up springs

There are tables (the 1405 is at page 20) that graph out what changes made to the step up springs, rods and jets do to the air/fuel mixture.

kleen56 Jets and metering rods won't wake up a motor. You need dial in the carb from what you have. Start by checking the spark plugs to determine the color. They should be a tan brown color. If they are white, your too lean, if black too rich. If you really want to mess with the rods, I'd buy a Edelbrock performance kit which comes with jets and rods and a diagram on how to get the most performance out of your carb. You can set Edelbrocks up for economy or performance.
