1949 Mercury rear end

Thanks Jared! I appreciate all assistance.

jhenry I removed my "old rear" from my 49 over the weekend and I tried to check the gear ratio. I'm afraid I might not be able to help. I think mine has 4.11's too. It was originally a v8 overdrive car so I guess that makes sense. I have a 50 sedan parts car that might have higher gears in it, but it will be another week or so before I go to see it. But I'll check it out for you when I do. I am a member of There is a great group of guys there on the forum and I am sure someone there would have what you need. I could ask for you if you would like me to?

1949 Mercury rearend

That's probably the best way to go, Trees. I'm just trying to retain all the old school stuff I can. It currently has a 39 top loader installed. Thanks for your thoughts!

trees FortyFord2, I had a flathead ford with 4.11 gears that screamed at 55, went to 3.78 and it screamed at 60. went to 3.54 and it screamed at 65. You can gain a lot more streetable car with an over drive tranny if you can find one (think we have a 51 vintage one, but it has always been contrary. Seems as though we could never get the selonoid to work every time. When the overdive worked, it was a totally different car). We have since put a 302 in it and installed a later model OD tranny. Now it will cruise at 75 all day.

jhenry I'll be working on my car this weekend and will check out the ratio for you. I'll post my findings as soon as I can. It will probably be Monday morning.

1949 Mercury Rear End

Thanks Joe! Good information. I really want to retain this rear, and just change the third member. This is a nice old chrome rear end from the good old days. This is an old 32 roadster that was built in the 50's. It's important that I keep her as close to how she was, if that makes sense. However with it's current gearing, I'm limited to about 55 MPH. And she's screaming at 55 MPH.
I really need to find some 49 Ford or Mercury freeway gears (3:30 to 1 to 3:54 to 1 would be ideal). Thank you very much for the information!

1949 rear end

Hi Jared:
No hurry at all. I'm in the St. Louis area. See if you can determine the ratio. Later model rear ends have a tag on the pumpkin. I'm not sure about a 49 rear, it could have been removed in the last 54 years? Maybe someone else will have some input?

Best Regards,

jhenry not very much.... I need to check to see what the ratio is. Where are you located? I supose it won't be very cheap to ship it? I'll try check it out before the end of the week, are you in a big hurry?

jhenry I just took out the stock rearend in my 49 ford coupe and replaced it with an 8.8. I don't know for sure what the gears were in the stock rear but If they are desirable to you I'll make you a good deal on them.

They will interchange with your 49 Mercury rear end pieces.

1949 Mercury Rear end

Hello to the House:
I currently have a 1949 Mercury rearend installed in an old roadster. The current gearing is 4.11 to 1. I'm looking for some gears that are a little more streetable. I wish to retain this rearend if possible. Besides Swap Meets, and Wrecking Yards, is anyone aware of a source for replacement gears for Mercury rearends?
