|sbutler||Having the same problem as you but with a 39 Ford. This post is a year old so you may have solved your problem. I am notching out the top of the crossmember on that side and re-boxing it so I will have a decent shot at the steering column. Steve|

Vega Box For S-10 Swap ?????
Have Pretty Much Ruled Out Using A Rack & Pinion At This Point Without Swapping To Completely Different Front Suspension. Still Considering Swapping To A Vega Box Instead Of The Stock S-10. Any Suggestions Or Experience With This? Have A New Vega Box And It Looks Like The Arm Length Is The Same. Will Post Some Close Up Pics.

There's no doubt that's going to be fun to work out.
Is there any room if you use a two piece link from the bottom of your steering column to a rack? You would need a pillow block (or two) on the frame at some point to keep things in line.
Can you get a few close up pics of the whole setup?

Yes, Need To Lighten The Front As Much As Possible. As Far As Changing Steering To A R & P, Would Luv To But: I Channeled The Front Of The Body About 4 Inches Over The Frame Which Will Make It Even More Of A Challenge To Get To The Box On The Rack Because A Straight Line From The Steering Column To The Rack Would Pass Directly Thru The S-10 Suspension Just Inside Of The Coil Spring, Below The Top A Arm And Above The Bottom. Too Much Gyration For U-joints. Back To The Drawing Board For Me. Perhaps I Do Another Season Or Two With The S-10 Front & Then Bite The Bullet And Cut It Off!

Well, this is sort of a multiple question really...you seem to be more concerned about keeping the front end light than anything else. Correct me if I'm wrong here.
The safety aspect should go without saying, so we must assume that whatever you do will have that in mind.
I'm not quite sure whether switching steering boxes will help you much, I would be more inclined to go for a R & P setup.
That little red T you see had a Honda R & P installed and I hooked it up to a Buick front end.
You may well be right about getting the steering shaft up to the rack, but with two U-joints it should be quite possible.
I found that the steering with the Honda rack was excellent...power might have helped when parked, but when rolling it was just fine.

S-10 Steering Sustitutes
I Purchased A 33 4 Dr Ply Street Rod That Has An S-10 Front End Grafted Onto 2x4 Frame Rails. I Want To Lighten The Front Without Sacrificing Any Safety. Can I Swap A Vega Steering Box For The Stock S-10, Or Has Anyone Gone Rack & Pinion? Looks Like It Would Be Difficult To Get Steering Shaft To The Rack. I Have Smoothed The Graft Both Front & Rear, So I Would Rather Keep It On At This Point. It Is Sbc Right Now But Plans Are For Blown Bbc In A Year Or Two. Will Need To Lighten As Much A Possible. Original Owner Backed Off Sway Bar To Top Of Threads, Do I Even Need It & All That Weight At This Point. Car Rides Decent And Doesn't Lean In Turns Or Wind. Appreciate Any And All Suggestions, Etc.
