Rad will be cold of course when you first start the motor so there is no chance of getting burned ..and once the thermostat opens you will see the coolant circulating in the rad .
If it appears low add some more coolant .
When rad is full put on the cap and put some coolant in the reservoir

That's exactly the way I as going to burp/assure it was filled up right.

Re-filling coolant

Emptied and flushed the cooling system on a SBC 350 (emptied via removal of lower hose as not confident radiator plugs aren't frozen in place) and replaced both hoses with spring-lined hoses because I think a cooling problem I had was related to them collapsing. Checked thermostat in boiling water before reassembling - it was opening and closing as it should have at expected temps.

After getting new hoses, thermo and housing/neck all back on, I filled my mix through the top of the radiator, which should have filled the lower hose (don't know how high it would force it into the block) and also should have spilled down into the upper hose and stopped at the closed thermostat.

I meant to fill my mix into the block before putting the thermo and housing all back on and subsequently filling through the top of the radiator like I did do. Is there typically enough water and coolant in the system (without filling back directly into the block) to start and run the car up to temp in order to burp the system and get it all-the-way filled up? Call me lazy but I really didn't want to remove the upper hose and make a mess and remove the thermo-housing again, scrape the old gasket and reapply the RTV gasket-maker and all that.

On a side note, there's no heater core to fill and what I filled through the top of the radiator is already equal to what I emptied out initially when removing the lower hose.
