I have a chance to buy a 1967 school bus that has been converted over into an r.v., it is not junk, that old man took his time and put a lot of years into building this thing and I mean it is loaded and has everything...I have never seen such an artwork. However, it has what the owner is calling a 293 industrial ford engine in it and I just don't think a 293 is going to pull very good going cross country. I have the chance to buy an overhauled 460 ford engine and I am wanting to know if anybody here knows of a company that makes adapter plates for the ford 460 to fit to the 4 speed standard transmission that is in the bus, that the 293 was connected to. Any ideas?

correction..its a 292 ford engine,not 293.

Yup...found that out. But I am still looking for a change over idea. Am concidering buying a used 4 speed tranny out of a junk yard to fit the 460 and then just stick that in the bus if the conversion plate idea ends up costing too much in comparing. :mwink:

Riley - can you crawl under there and take some photos. Ford made some "interesting" choices for engine/transmission combinations on these buses and others on truck chassis. Someone will have a suggestion. Of course, a diesel conversion would be best, but that 460, besides being a gas guzzler, is a fine way to go

If it is a 292 and it could be, it probably is a bit wheezy. 460 would fit with the right engine stands.. T-18 4spds are dirt cheap, being a '67 it could actually have 1. in that case, you could use a 351M/400 bell, and a 390 flywheel and clutch on a pre '78 429/460 and it will all bolt togther and work..

It would take just about the same work to put in a 6.9/7.3L diesel tho. you only need a 460- diesel bell adapter plate, and some motor mount work.

Yep. 351M/400 bells are the easiest to find and share the bolt pattern.. 460 4spd bells are hard to find, most were aluminum bells from '80-'87 trucks, and most of those are for hydraulic clutch, so they won't direct swap.

Transmission if it doesent have a 4spd like you want is the easy part. Ford used the 3+OD 4spd in the trucks up to like '84, and the T-18 4spd ( granny 1st ) up to '93 as an option in F-150's, and the only 4spd option from '84ish to '88. 6.32 1st and 7.44 reverse is quite low for an RV but it'll still work. Common price is $200ish out of a junkyard.
