700R4 Behind a BBC?

I was planning to put a 700R4 behind a 454 (street engine), primarily for the 4th gear and mech. speedometer. But in another forum, they are saying the 700R4 can't handle the BBC torque? I've never dealt with a 700R4 before, so I don't know. Anybody can confirm or deny this issue?

I am a big fan of a 4L80E, and in stock form can handle upwards of 650-700 h.p. (I'm using one in my build)-it is basically a 400 with an overdrive. The downside is that it has to have a "Controller" (Computer) to operate. If you can live without the overdrive, a TH400 is a Tank-

If you decide to go with a 4L80E, there are a bunch of stand alone Computers out there (and it seem like more of them are available each day). I like the Optishift personally, although there are many, many more-

Here is the Optishift (bottom of the page):

700r behind a BBC

Thank you 35window, it already has a 700r in it, it is a 1988 Chevy 4x4, 2500,extended cab long bed. It came with a 350 motor and 700r trany, i got a 454 out of a 1990 1 ton to put in it this year, the 350 that is in it now is gutless. The 454 should give it the power i need. I have had nothing but bad luck with the 700r trany's.

Thank you...

7oor behind a BBC

Thank you for the suggestion, SSedan64, cheap is always better for me, lol, trying to raise my two daughters on a shoe string as it is. But it would be kinda of a pain, this will be my main work truck. I cut and haul fire wood and scrap metal and cars too. Thats the reasoning for the 454 instead of the gutless 350 it has in it now. And a good trany that can handle big loads in the woods or pulling cars on the freeway.

Thank You...

454 infront of a 4l80e

ok if you are not going to work the tranny that hard i would go with the 4l80e. But if you are going to work it to death there is no way i would buy that tranny. I have a 1991 1 ton with a throttle bodied 454 putting out around 440hp with a 4l80e backing it. I work the crap out of this truck and i am on my 6th 4l80e tranny in 140,000 miles. I am pulling loads of more than 17,000 pounds with it though. It would be a great tranny if it were just for a cruiser or hot rod but definatly not for a truck that you want to be able to beat into the ground and not have to worry about breaking on you. Good luck!!

700r Behind a BBC

Thank you 1991BBC454, this is why i am looking for a good strong tranny, the 700r cant take the work load, i will be running a stock 454, in my 1988 Chevy 4x4, extended cab, long bed, 3/4. It has a gutless 350 in it now, i cut and haul fire wood for a living, so i need a strong tranny, that will handle big loads of wood. Nothing makes a person sicker, than being down in a hole and try to pull out, and you cant, ether because the tranny wont hang with it or the motor powers out, then you have to throw half your load off.I also haul scrap and tow cars with this truck, so it has to have some kind of over drive too, by far, this is no hot rod or trick truck, just my work horse. It wont pull as much as yours 1991BBC454, but it will be close...

Thank You.....

With that kind of load '1991BBC454' you need a Diesel with an Allison Trans. :D

Not many OD Trans are capable of Hauling heavy loads In OD gear. Most recommend using D, including the 700R4/4L60/60E/65E/70E. I'd only use the 4L80Es' OD on flat level road when towing something really heavy.
As for pulling out of a hole, taking off, the 700R4/4L60s' low 3.06 1st gear would be better than the 4L80Es' 2.48 1st gear.
