milner if the u joints are worn out, you will get some play, but if they are seized, they will be tight. look for powder rust around the seal on the caps. good luck.

sportcoupe It is a 4x4 and the ball joints are new within the last 2years. I will check the axles for play. thanks sc

kleen56 Are we talking 4X4? If so, check the axle u joints/ ball joints. Pretty common problem on Dakotas...You can jack the front end up and spin the wheel. Now, turn the wheel while it is jacked up and try to spin it. It will probably be hard to turn. you can also grab the axle shaft near the u-joint and twist back and forth and pull up and down side to side. If there is any play the joint is bad. Not too hard to replace.

power steering issue

I have a 2001 dakota and the power steering has started to feel choppy. It doesn't turn smooth any more. I checked the fluid and the belt doesn't slip. Not sure if the pump is going or the rack itself. truck has 210,000 miles and needs to keep going. any help? sc
