What is the best thing you can do with a rotted out 1954 four door Caddillac?
Build a boat tail speedster!!!
First you gotta cut the roof off!
Then cut the skin free. ....and slice that down the middle
Then cut apart some old porch posts to recycle the free 1x1 tubing. Bend that into a shape that follows the curve of the roof. What the heck bend it so it makes the shape of a 30's Indy car.
Prop up half a roof and see what it looks like. Looks like the ROOFus Special to me.
I see you removed that bar coming forward, looks much better. It really wasn't "triangulating" at all it was going straight out level and doing next to nothing so it wasn't needed.
I wasn't talking about that one Randy, I was talking about the brace he had going from the firewall support over to the frame rail.
But honestly, that isn't a true "triangulated" support either. The brace going down at an angle is doing 99% of the support. It isn't like support going across a corner like this.
If you look at the lower corner of the triangle you added, there is nothing there, the bend in that piece would do next to nothing what so ever in holding the motor up by it's self, it is more aesthetic than anything. But that is nit picking and I don't mean to argue with you over this. But just to throw it all out and discuss.
He was posting about his motor mounts and I made a comment about TRIANGULATION,,Then you come back with ''It really wasn't "triangulating" at all ''.. Didn't sound right on this end... :nono:
Oh hell yes this has been a cool build from the very beginning. All I needed to see was that 50's Cadillac roof was going to be body panels and I was HOOKED! It's a one off nothing like it in the whole wide world build and I DIG IT!

Another big reason that its on the ground....I've been needing to roll it over and weld all of the bottom joints. I have to make myself do that before I get too much farther.
I also plan to box in the front frame rails at the same time.
All of that tropical moisture pumped in by the former hurricane made it difficult to get interested in doing anything in th shop. I did get the outdoor pics though.
I love your car, it makes me smile. I also love my cable internet! The last time I opened this thread was with DSL and it took forever for all your photos to open, it now happens the second I open the thread! I love this, glad my son talked me into it.
It looks like my next long weekend to play on the car will be new years weekend. I wasted my long thanksgiving weekend on the beach. ...but it wasn't all bad.
I love that you have the energy, and gumption to see this car finished,I only have 1 suggestion,on the upper edges of the red panel, and the panel to its rear,i would take a section of large brake line, and using a cutting wheel, put a cut thru it length ways, then force the tube, down over those upper edges, and weld the tube into place, much finished look...

The body panels are still in the mock-up phase. The plan is to weld everything together and "box in" the cockpit like a 20's-30's roadster.
There will be inner body panels and a 1-2" ledge at the top that seperates the inner and outer panels
