vicrod The Sunbeam Tiger used a Ford motor.
You will need to find the brand and cat# of the new alternator. Then find the correct wiring diagram.
Could be a GM. Electricity doesn't care.

thanks guys...I am going to trace all the wires and follow the schematic on the thread suggested by "s10"..between you two...I have a better understanding about it...I can make them shine real well, but I am "dumb as dirt" when it comes to electrical...thanks again and I will chat more later and tell you my results...see ya later

EOD Guy I'll bet a cup of coffee that the terminal, red and white, wires are wired backwards.

The #1 terminal wire goes to the idiot light on the dash, it is the exciter wire and tells the alt to start producing juice. When the alt isn't running it provides an internal ground for the idiot light, the other side of the idiot lifgts is tied to a switched 12v source. When the engine starts and the alt starts producing juice the internal ground is removed and the idiot light goes out etc.....

The #2 terminal wire is the sense wire and is tied into the hot side of the wiring harness. This tells the alt to produce more or less juice, depending on the demands of the electrical system.

The large studded terminal on the rear is the charge wire and goes directly to the pos post on the battery.

Sense your's got hot..... bet you that it's grounding internally, even when not running.

I would almost bet that the reason your alternator is getting hot with the key on is the #1 terminal has full 12v to it at all times. There needs to be a resistance on that terminal, not a direct connection to 12 volts.

richowens hello s10...It is difficult to tell you how it is wired now...what I need to do is disconnect everything and start all over...this alternator is from an early gm application and has a white wire and a red wire in a plug with a large insulated nut coming out of the end of it...the trouble with this car now is that I met with a terrible fire and all things under the hood have and are being replaced

Hi Richard, welcome to Hotrodders. Is your new alternator a one wire or a three wire? It would help if you could describe exactly how you have it hooked up.

Hi everyone...I am Richard and I have a 65 Sunbeam tiger with a hypo 289...pretty fast but I am doing a lot of restorations and modifications to it now..I have a problem with the wiring..My new alternator was wired for me by someone who didnt know how to do it either..It gets hot with just the key on????hope someone here can help me out..i do also need to mention that I have eliminated the voltage regulator since the alt.has an internal one...also this project is going from a generator to an alternator
