|ap72||Yea the 108 cam would peak around 6300 in a well built 400, too much for your intent. The 230 range on a solid cam would be about right, id still use a 210cc head though.|

|High School Hot Rod||Howards direct lube lifters for sure! And yes I would like to keep peak horse around 5500rpm. Obviously The goal here is decent horsepower and loads of torque. If i can possibly get 400+ hp and 500+ lb/ft tq I will be one happy frickn camper. I looked up the prc 108, looks like a good cam if i went with some large ports, was that your intent?|

|ap72||Going with 210 runners would be good if you plan on revving this but the valves they show are tulipped... usually those are only used on hemi engines as they are not the best valve for a 23 degree port.|

I don't know anything about the aluminum vortecs, but the standard vortecs are on the small side for a 350, really small for a 400, but if you're staying at 5600 rpm or less they will be fine.
If going with a solid cam the prc108 is a cheap cam that will work very well with a 400 with a moderate port. I would also run face oiling lifters with any solid cam and with tha particular one 1.5 rockers for the street.
Solid cams as a general rule will take about 10 degrees more duration than a hyd to haved a simmilar power curve.
Btw thanks for the compliment, some people around here like me and some don't as I have no faith in anything that hasn't been soundly proven, which dismisses a lot of old wives tales and what people are sure they "know". The best thing to do when building an engine is constantly ask for explicit proof.

It looks like I would have to implement a custom ground cam for this one. At least if i want to use a solid ft @230/230 dur. with an lsa of lets say around 107. (normal 280 magnum i believe is 110). If i changed to 1.6 rockers that would put lift at .512 which I think would be adequate.
At the bottom is a link to a set of 190cc aluminum vortec heads on ebay. As far as big port and aluminum these are all my budget will allow. If I don't get the go from you guys on them it will be summit racing vortecs. They are $580 for an assembled pair, lifts up to .520, and I will prolly take them apart and touch up the bowls just a little.
And hey my 400 only has 2 freeze plugs on the sides so I can tell people its a 355 with stock vortec heads

There is nothing "race" about that build but realize that magazines use the most "optimistic" dynos around. If you go with a different cam but the same heads use that duration or LESS. More lift would help and a tighter lsa. Large port vortecs would be a big step up in power but will lose a little low end tq.
Its a nice build but can be improved, with the right improvements the numbers you get will be closer to their fantasy numbers as well.

|67-4-fun||500 ft/lbs from a sbc is pretty much making it an almost race only motor, 400-450 ft/lbs of torque from a sbc is pretty duable and can be street drivin.. but I understand your thought tho... Build you a BBC and have over 600ft/lbs of torque at 3500 rpm!!! and drive it on the street... lol.. can you say wheel spinner!!!! just my thoughts tho..|

Poormans quest for 7's w/...406?
I wanted to mention this in my previous thread but figured I already had plenty on the plate. If you didnt see the other thread, the current plan was wake up my 383 and back it buy a good th350 or 400, 3000+ stall, 4:10's, lock right differential, with 26in mickey t ET drags. I didnt mention however that I picked up a excellent condition 400 for $150 a year ago. I had it bored 30 over and havent touched it since. I don't know if you are familiar with the Impersonator 406. It is a 5.7 rod 406, 9.5 cr, unmolested 175cc iron vortec heads, airgap intake, and a 230/230 .480/.480 cam. It made 428hp @ 5,000 and 525tq @ 3,500...WOW. Im half tempted to through hyper slugs and arp rod bolts in my 400 and duplicate this build. Of course I want to get greedy and do a little bit more to it. Such as: how much more duration could one go without sacrificing that amazing tq, a little more lift can never hurt right? what about aluminum vortecs and more compression, will larger port vortec heads actually cause a loss in torque do to slower velocity's?
I'm just exploring my options, 500+ lb/ft from a small block just makes me drool. Thanks, Kurt
