no such thing as a cheap 400 build. everything on a 400 is more expensive than a 350. if you line hone the main caps you need a special rear main seal. you can use 3.57 rods but have to buy proper pistons for the roads. in fact the 350 rods dwell longer and will give you a few extra ponies. i have a 400 block and crank for sale.

How much more is a 383 than a 350 rebuild?
Unless you're just freshening up an old lump, it's close to even to add the cubes. If you're putting in a new crank anyway, 383 is the way to go for cheap streetable torue.

I would think that if the budget is tight you're headed off in the wrong direction already. The best bang per buck would be a 350 Chevy small block. Your 400 or even a 383 will not ever be a budget build, like a 350 is.
The 350 would be a huge step up from the 283, and would actually be less expensive to build HP with than a 283.

A 383sbc might be a cheaper way to go if you don't have a 400 donor block.

400 SBC Budget Build
I've got a 1962 Chevrolet II/ Nova that I bought a couple months ago for a first restoration job. The car came with a 283 sbc but it needs a lot of TLC and I really don't care for the lack of cubes. I'm thinking I will go with a 400 sb and see what I can do with it. The only problem is a lack of funding. Anyone have any suggestions?
