MARTINSR Even under perfect conditions with paint applied perfectly sanding a metallic SS and buffing it is asking for trouble as it WILL show blotches of metallic every time depending on how much you sand. Sure, I quick "nib" of dust you can pull it off but if you cut any more than just a nib, you are going to cut into the layers of metallic.

adantessr I have no qualms about wet sanding metallics. If the paint is put on uniform, it will be the same all the way through. Now if you had a metallic slide in a previous coat, you would want to be careful not to sand into that coat, but otherwise.......

cutthroatkid All came ot well,the issue ended up being the metallics had settled I made a dummy mistake&didn't mix my paint well that go around.So it was a easy fix,My old man said he thought the metallic was gonna come out bad because of my lack of experience l.But he saw it&was pretty surprised.Ill post pix soon as I het my new wheels tires&all on.&I know they say not the wet sand ss metallics,but I did...really wet really soft&got really good results

123pugsy A small step ladder will help you get the reach you need when you respray.

Or try letting all the air out of the tires to bring it down.

cutthroatkid HELP!...haha no not that bad but...so Ive done the bedliner&Ive saved the roof for last now I shoot the roof&I went ahead &shot the hood again because I had a couple of spots I had to fix.
I feel I did a great job for a first time deal BUT now heres my problem the roof&hood both&I dont know of you would call it tiger stripe lr something else but you can vaguley see lines it looks as if some areas are shinier &some darker.Im.short&I have short reach couldnt do the hood or roof complety in one pass did one side&then to next.I dis left to right&then up&down.Now my hood didnt have this issue before.Ive got just barley enough paint left so Ive got one shot to fix it so...Im guessing stanf back a few feet&mist...thenbre mist etc.Any pointers.Turn air up?Down?I did great on the rest no orange peel only runs I got was really just because I made a mistake with set up.
Im loving painting!Im gonna start painting every thing I can get my hands on till Im good.SO GLAD I TOOK THE PLUNGE&SPRAYED HER.For 100 in paint,a hf gun&only a couple spots that I now know how to avoid coming out bad Im.stoked...so ready to put m wrenched up&focus more on my paint &fabrication work...anyways please help with said issue

Handfull54 When I painted my truck with base coat/clear coat a guy at PPG told me to go 3 and 3. They also tell you to use enough paint to cover the material. One guy told me if your doing a really nice paint job for a show car to do three coats of clear then sand it with 1000,1500,2000,2500 and finally 3000. Then give it a final coat of clear. Hope this helps you. As you can figure out by now it's all in the PREP work. My truck was the first thing I ever painted. I just bought some books and got a lot of advise from my local paint supply shop. Again it's all in the preperation and paying attention to the small details. Do that and you will be happy.

I have never applied more than 3, so I don't really know. Hmmm, maybe someone else can chime in on this. One thought is, if you get a paint chip in the future, it'll be a deep one, with that many coats. Personally, I would have let the paint cure for a couple of days and sanded out the blemishes with 320 and 600 and then recoated with just one or two coats.

cutthroatkid Ok...no tiger stripes but a few other issues. The gun started leaking while doing the first coat on the hood...no biggie I got a few blemishes on my 2nd coat so now Im trying to cover them up with extra coats.Im on.my fourth&about to spray my fifth.Speaking of fifth I think it'll look good from 5 ft away.All in all good learning experince.

Handfull54 You are getting some real good advise here about painting and about safety. Take this advise and take your time. I painted my truck myself and had never painted anything bigger than what a rattle can could cover. The prep is the most work followed by the color sanding and buffing. Like Big Al said paint will not cover poor prep work and that is the best advise you will ever get about bodywork. Your young so listen to the guys who have been around a while. That way you will get to be around for a while to enjoy your projects to come.

Now to answer your questions. You will be surprised how much elbow grease it will take to color sand the urethane. Get anautomotive sanding sponge from Sherwin Williams or NAPA or whoever sells them in your area.
Sand with 1500 grit and then with 2000 grit. The trick is to wet sand and then dry it and look for any bright spots. You have to sand with the 1500 until it all looks satin with no bright spots, then lightly sand with the 2000. Then you have to buff with compound and then finishing compound and lastly a good polymer polish. If you do this, it will have a mirror finish. Keep in mind that this process will take a good 8 to 10 hrs on your truck. If you're not that picky, spray it and call it good.
As for cleaning the gun. You can use a slow drying lacquer thinner or acetone. But it is best to use the thinner that is recommended for the paint being use. Also, the acetone will work in most cases in getting paint off before it dries. After the urethane dries, good luck. I don't know of anything short of paint stripper that will touch it.
