|cobalt327||Actually it's ~376.99, or 377. Might as well get used to keeping things as accurate as practical; guys are all the time tossing numbers around w/the decimals in the wrong place, etc. Doesn't matter until the machinist reads these wrong figures and uses them as if they are correct...|

You might read about the crate 383 sold by GMPP. it uses a 350 block but with a standard 4" bore and a 3.8" crank stroke to get the "383" designation.
But almost all other SBC stroker combinations will be based around a 3.75" stroke crank and a 350 SBC block bored to whatever oversize is necessary to get a good bore, usually not over 0.060" over bore- 0.060" over makes the engine 388 cid.

The whole idea behind a "383" is taking a 350 and changing the crank from the factory 3.48" to 3.75". As stated the bore doesn't matter but to actually come up with approx 383ci you use a bore of 4.030 and a stroke of 3.75.
To come up with the stroke of 3.75" there are many options. When after market cranks were not as widely available as they are now people would take 400sbc cranks and have the main journals turned down to fit the 350 block... Now it is so much cheaper and easier to just buy a brand new one. Summit sells rotating assemblies all ready with matching parts and etc.
Your best bet would be to take your block to your machinist and tell him what you want.

Please don't take some of these responses too harshly because basic questions like these really have been asked thousands of times here and there comes a point where there really is no reason to keep answering. It's not intended to come off as a bunch of jackarses here rather it is to try and encourage people to research their questions, especially the basic ones.
Anyway, a 383 uses a 400 crank or an aftermarket crank with the same stroke length. A true 383 would have to be a 350 block bored .030 over. But don't sweat the small stuff. If the block doesn't need to be bored at all or it needs .060 then just take whatever it needs. The relatively small difference in cubic inches won't make a terribly big difference in power.

i want to build a 383 stroker and i know there needs to do some machine work. but i want to make the most hp a 383 stroker can make i already have the 350 sbc engine block. what should i do or need as parts wise
