hang up

At the starter disconnect the purple wire at the S terminal. Then run a jumper from the battery + to the S terminal or a remote start button. If the car starts normally, the starter is OK. If not the starter is hanging up.
Next get rid of the Ford solenoid. This site has some folks who like to use them but I am not convinced they help anything.

LATECH Could be mechanical, like a starter that isnt shimmed right(too tight) or an electrical issue like a weak ground to the ford solenoid, causing it to act like a shunt, when current draw is high (like when cranking) it stays in, after engine starts, current draw goes down (less power required-engine running) , when current draw drops, solenoid releases. A bad ground can exaggerate the "shunt" condition. I have had a poorly grounded ford solenoid cause a starter to stay engaged a few times in my career.
Also the ford solenoid could be mechanically sticking internally as well as the GM solenoid on the starter could be hanging in. Could be rusty or in need of a stiffer return spring. Just a few thoughts.
How is the ford solenoid wired in? Purple wire from key to ford solenoid-large terminal to S terminal???

starter keep crankin'

I have a weird combo; 454 in a 65 chevy; and I used a ford solenoid in line before going to the chevy starter. I don't mind removing it, but I like the convenience if I have to replace it or whatever.

Anyway, when I start the car, the starter keeps turning about 2-3 seconds too long. Before I spend money on a new starter or ignition switch, does anyone have any suggestions?
