single stage metallic IS the issue. The only guys I know that can spray it well is painters at Maaco. I kid you not. At a decent maaco around here the guy can paint single stage metallic really well, better than I've ever seen it laid down. Plenty of practice on junkers, that's why.

It looks a little too wet and blotchy.

LOL, this brings back a horrible memory. :pain: I was a doing a demo when I was a paint rep that I had no business doing, a complete SS metallic on a Granada as I remember. Anyway, I could paint all day long with BC/CC, completes, blends it don't matter, I was confortable as all get out with the BC/CC but hadn't painted any SS metallic in years. I had no business doing it but thought I was a bad A and went for it. Can we say "Tiger stripes"? HOLY COW what a mess! I tried and tried to fix it before I had to give up, it was crap. Had to be sanded and painted over.

Lesson learned. :spank:

I learned with single stage metallics and pollies it comes easy to me after all these years I guess I have the nack for dusting on the last leveling coat! and then clearing ! I can see stripes or motling if any with single stage because of the gloss and stand back away from the surface and re dust at an angle till the metalics lay down right and level out. But some base coats give me trouble because they start to lose their gloss and I cant see the stripe or area of motle to dust it out! And then there are base coats Ive sprayed that I was sure they would have a few motled spots in compound tight curves where the paint was heavy that came out perfect when cleared!

Maybe some base coats are foolproof  LOL I dont use enough paint any more to try and find the foolproof, I just stick to my old ways and what I know works now! Im too old to learn the new materials and methods for the few cars Ill paint during the rest of my time left! But if I was young again I would try to keep up and be fluent on every thing new! and the old materials Ive used are changing so fast its really bad its not the same formula and reacts different but it carry's the same name and label !!! :pain:

Excuse me for being off subject: Chris

one reason why BC CC is better with metalics is how they lay. No matter how good you spray a SS metallic it will always look like the flakes are two dimentional, but with BC CC they appear to have depth to them and aren't just standing on one level like on a piece of paper, and that's what SS metallic looks like. Also, you're trying to get your flakes to lay right AND have a decent gloss and peel. This makes it difficult when you add the fact that you don't want to do too much sanding on buffing on SS metallic cause it will bring the flake to the surface and then it will look like a fish was scaled on your car and cleared over. BC CC is much more forgiving in the spray process, will look better (metallics), and last longer. So if you put considerable time in your project might want to consider that. Just my two cents.

Single stage solids are a different story.
